No display and seemingly power cycling over and over

A while ago I opened up my brand new (never powered on) 2018 Mac Mini, and following the guide here I swapped the base RAM for the OWC 64GB upgrade. After putting everything back together, I hooked up the Mini to my Apple Thunderbolt displays.

When I hit the power button, the front LED lights up but there’s no image on the Thunderbolt displays. Furthermore, after about 30-40 seconds the LED turns off and the fan makes a brief “woosh” sort of sound. The LED stays off for roughly 10-12 seconds then turns back on, repeating the cycle over and over.

Does this mean I don’t have the RAM installed properly, or maybe it’s the wrong RAM? Could it be a power or fan issue.

I double checked the Thunderbolt displays and they work fine with my Macbook. I’ve tried using a standard TB cable into my USB-C adapter as well as the regular TB line from the back of the TB display, but it changes nothing. I’m lost.

Gekozen oplossing

I solved the problem, but hope this answer stays here if anyone has a similar issue. The rubber grommets that hold the RAM can detach an individual bracket. When I opened it back up, the left side grommet was loose, and the back left bracket was in the open position—meaning the RAM wasn’t properly seated.

Regardless, be slow and gentle when doing anything inside the new Mac Mini. I broke my antenna socket when prying it up. Thankfully I’m not worried about using it.
