i had a freedompop AT&T sim card, which only has data access, when i put it in it shows service. It does not get service if i put in a AT&T or Verizon sim card.

I guess it might be the antenna, SIM slot or something severe, like damaged motherboard. Or it could be something with the SIM card itself.

Try to remove SIM card from the phone and then put it back in. Does it go from “No SIM” to “No Service”? Can you also try a different SIM card?

i have tried 2 sim cards, they go from no sim -> searching -> no service.

Got it. You should check antenna cable then. I doubt that swollen battery would cause any motherboard issues, so that’s probably the reason behind “No Service” sign.

i saw on youtube there is there wifi antenna cable, thats by the speaker. Is there a antenna cable for the cellular antenna as well?

Yep. It’s at the left top side of the motherboard. There’s iFixit guide on how to replace it.
