My iMac does not want to update it's firmware and it won't restart.

My Mid 2011 iMac 27” does not restart when I try to install the latest firmware update. It simply shows an error message stating that it can’t restart and does not let me go any further.

Can you give us a bit more here on what firmware update you are trying to apply (source & reason)

@danj Apple periodically update their operating systems and I've tried to do so but my iMac won't restart. Because I use the computer for my work I need to access it and I've never had this problem before and I don't know the answer: How do I get my iMac to update and restart?

@Nicholas Thomas - What is the macOS you are trying to install? Also what was the OS version you had on the system before you tried upgrading.

How big is the drive and how full is it?

What can be confusing is the difference between the different elements of the OS. While Apple does update the OS is sometimes updates parts of the EFI with new malware signatures. From what you are describing it sounds more like you had an OS or drive failure Vs a firmware issue.

Can you describe what happened during the update process and what you did. I assume at this point you've rebooted your system. What you restart it what do you hear and what do you see?
