What's the best CPU I can put in a mid 2010 27 inch iMac?

So I have an iMac 2010 27inch and have an i3 in it, even with a SSD in it it’s a bit sluggish because the CPU just isn’t good enough anymore. What’s the best upgrade I could put in there to make it better? Thanks!

The best CPU this series had was a 2.93 GHz Core i7 (I7-870) thats the best you can go.

Nothing better then? I saw some people talk about Xeons for example

Xeon's, really! There's more to it than plug and play here.

First the system's power supply needs to be powerful enough to supply the power the more powerful chips of the day needed. While newer chips have gotten better in their power needs by die shrink in the same effort the CPU sockets have been altered and the PCH logic and system firmware likewise will need to support the CPU in question. Nothing like that has happened in this series.

@danj Yeah I guess that makes sense. i7 it is then! The i3 is really choking up these days now and everything is laggy even with relatively enough ram

@nar001 - An i7 will be a very good upgrade given what you currently have an i3, it won't be sluggish afterwards ;-}

Don't forget to get your system to at least 8 GB or RAM 12 GB is what I would go for.
