CPU, NVMe and HDD replacements, questions

Hello,

I have the 5k iMac 2019, it is the MRR12B/A 3.7Ghz i5 version with a 2TB fusion drive. I plan to fit a 9900k and if possible, fit a NVMe SSD in there, but I have a few questions.

  1. First of all, do the adhesive screen strips from the 2017 version fit this model? If not, where can I get the correct ones, please? (Edit: found the answer to this on here, it seems they are the same)
  2. Does this model have a working NVMe slot?
  3. If there is a working NVMe slot, can it accept, say a Samsung 970 Pro NVMe SSD, I already have one of these, would it need some kind of adapter? If so, please can someone let me know which one?
  4. Can the 2TB fusion drive be left in place and used as a storage drive, or am I better off picking up a decent 3.5” drive, or even a 2.5” drive + adapter?
  5. If I change the fusion drive for another, do I need some kind of diode to stop the fans spinning up? if so, can anyone point me in the right direction to buy this please?

Lets first look at the CPU, while your system came with a I9-9900K the logic board Apple uses is not the same as the others so upgrading your system may not be possible. Given how new the system is I don’t think anyone has tried doing this yet.

As for your drive options: A Fusion Drive is made up of two physical drives the SATA HDD and a small PCIe/NVMe blade SSD. So if you are going to alter the config you will first need to break the Fusion Drive set so you can remove the current blade SSD to replace it with the larger blade SSD.

Apple uses a custom SSD made by Samsung but it is not M.2 complaint so you can’t use the Samsung 970 Pro M.2 SSD. The best choice here is to use the custom SSPOLARIS SSD You can read more here The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

Your current SATA HDD (what was part of your Fusion Drive) does not need to be replaced. But, there are better drives being made as an example the Seagate FireCuda SSDH which is a faster drive, as well as larger drives are even possible but their access speed is slower.

So depending on what your usage is you likely want a 512 GB blade SSD for your OS, apps & virtual RAM/cache needs. Leaving your work on the HDD. If you are into video or music production you will want a larger bade SSD like 1 or 2 TB here besides what we have listed before we want to use the larger space from scratch and the work being created. In any case you want to leave 1/4 of the SSD unused for the system to leverage for its work space.

Thanks for the info on the Fusion drive, I didn't realise it was two separate drives. Is it possible to remove both and just use a SATA III SSD? That would be fine for me, I have a 2017 21.5 iMac that came with a very slow spindle drive and I replaced it with an SSD and it is very quick. Or maybe keep the SSD part of the fusion drive and swap the mechanical part of the fusion drive for an SSD? Can that be done?

I currently use a couple of SATA III Seagate external drives for the bulk of my storage and don't keep very much on the Mac itself, so access times aren't too important, but a decent throughput would be preferable.

I'm in the UK and the prices of those blade SSDs that you linked to are not far off the price of Apple's own upgrades! If a single, fast, good quality, high capacity SATA III SSD is workable instead of both fusion drives, then that's probably the route I'll go. Does that sound reasonable?

Sure you can remove both and put in a SATA drive alone (SSD or HDD). Just keep mind a SATA drive is less effective than a PCIe/NVMe drive. If you want performance I would go with the blade SSD. As far as the current blade SSD it's quite small and useless by its self and you really can't use it with a second SSD. So you might as well pull it.

The one you linked to is out of stock, unfortunately. I found the Transcend Jetdrive 850 for a good price. I don't need a large SSD as it is pretty much just MacOS and a few smallish apps on there, I'm currently on a 512GB SSD on a hackintosh and that's only 145GB free and there's a lot of stuff in the documents folder as I've been sorting through a lot of files to keep and dump, so I reckon I'll be ok with this one, assuming it's reliable? Do you know anything about this drive? the online reviews seem mostly positive.

I would recommend going with a 500/512 GB size as the ideal size you do want to make sure your SSD still has unused space. You'll want at least 1/3 free with the smaller 256 GB drives and 1/4 with the 500 and larger drives so the system has enough space for virtual RAM, Caching & Paging file.

Thanks Dan, I managed to find an aura pro x2 1Tb. I was wondering about the remaining space where the 3.5” drive was...could I get a dual 2.5 inch bay and add a pair of SSDs in there with some kind of sata extension/adapter? Thanks.
