Is a charging port replacement possible without microsoldering?

Hi, my tablet started stopped charging a while back so I replaced the battery. It turned on fine with the charge that was in the battery when it came, but then refused to charge again. So now after cleaning the port out without success I’m wondering if I need to buy a new charging port, and if the repair is possible without microsoldering. After some testing I discovered my charger is defective, and so obviously I tried a different charger (not an official one, just a micro USB cord plugged into a phone adapter) and I got the charging symbol but the battery level wouldn’t increase. Should I try a different charger before I get a port? I don’t know, but if you could help me out I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

I’m no Samsung devices expert, but don’t give for granted a port replacement will help, it may as well be a board issue. Unless you have the skills to do it yourself you’d need some Pro able to test if power reaches the board before venturing into replacement, as it may as well be a charging circuit issue.

@taffythecat “Should I try a different charger before I get a port? “ Yes, that is what I would start with if it would be my device. At minimum you need an AC-DC adapter that delivers 5V, 2000mA. If that does not work, then consider replacing the port. It is not a terribly complicated soldering procedure but will require decent skills and decent tools.

my esteemed colleague @arbaman is of course absolutely right. Therefore I added this to my answer. It should allow you to test your charging circuit just in case a new charging port will not resolve it. You can of course check this before you try to resolder the port.

Great answer, thank you. For some reason my normally very technological brain didn’t think to plug it into my laptop with a regular micro USB, and fortunately that does seem to charge it, although very slowly and the connection is very poor. I have a tool to test whether power is reaching the board, so I might try that, but first I’ll try a new charger. Otherwise I’ll probably give up on it. I love repairing tablets and phones, but I have absolutely no experience soldering and no equipment to do so. Thanks for the response.

@taffythecat don't give up on it. Hate for stuff to go into the "dumpster". Having the port replaced is not as difficult as it sounds. I am sure that you are somewhere where somebody can do some soldering for you.

I also hate to see fixable things going to the dumpster, I’ve literally seen people who had phones with cracked screens and nothing else about to throw them out. I’ll look around for people that can get it done. How much do you think it would cost?

It'll depend on where you are located. In the past I've had a lot of luck with colleges, trade schools, Universities and even hobby clubs. RC vehicle clubs are a great resource. If you remove the board and have the connector, and do not request any kind of warranty etc., it really should not be that expensive.
