Your drive has either failed or is failing. Drag what ever you can get off it and onto another media.

You did not say if you were using it with a Mac or PC. The drive may just have developed some bad blocks making it unreadable. When you do format it MS Fat will work as an external with Mac or PC. But you need to erase it and use a “Secure Erase” that writes zeros to every block on the drive. This will allow the directory the ability to map out all the bad blocks so they will not be written to again. It may take several hours to do this.

There can be numerous things.

It may have been partitioned but not formatted?

Has it been formatted on a linux system?

Has it been tried on another system?

Have you been using this before?

Go to Conputer Management and click on Disk Management.

If it tells you that the disk is Simple, Basic, NTFS it was formatted on a Windows machine.

Does it say Primary Partition? If not, then it hasn’t been formatted and formatting will need to be done to make the disc usable.
