MacBook wont boot, install from usb or startup recovery or safe mode.

My 2013 macbook air running (i believe) OS X Mojave wont boot. It stays on the black loading screen with the progress bar loading very slowly and when it is full after a while shuts off the mac.

I’ve tried resetting the SMC, the NVRAM, PRAM, booting into safe mode and recovery (both internet and local recovery) . Safe mode or recovery both were not able to boot.

I’ve created a bootable USB to reinstall the OS, however when booting from the USB the progress bar is very slow and eventually doesn’t boot from the USB. I’ve tested the USB on a different macbook air that had no issue booting into the USB installer.

Any ideas on how to revive the macbook air that seemingly doesn’t have hardware issues?

@savagegunner00 - Have you tried just running the onboard diagnostics? Restart the system and press the D key to enter into it. Tell us if you get any errors.

I ran the diagnostics, and there were no errors. The only thing it displayed was that the power adapter was not tested (as it was not plugged in). I restarted from the results screen and the boot goes back to the progress bar that never results in a boot.

Hi, did you check if the laptop is compatible with Mojave?

door

I had the system running flawlessly. I also made a high sierra installer which also did not function.

If you have the same model its compatible with Mojave without any special efforts. To check your system plug in your systems S/N here EveryMac - Lookup jump down to the bottom of the systems info to locate the macOS listing. Even if it's not listed as supported you still might be able to use DosDude1 to get it to work.

I would be careful as the newer APFS file systems does not run well on SATA based drives.

@savagegunner00 - At this point I think you need to try another internal Original Apple SSD to see if you are able to boot up under it. I have one that I use for diagnostic purposes. It has Sierra on it as that’s the last HFS+ bootable OS the blade SSD’s the 2015 and older MacBook Air’s/Pro’s can use. If it works I know the users SSD is worn or damaged.

I managed to install Ubuntu onto the MacBook air with no problem after reformatting the ssd and it runs without an issur. I then tried running the internet recovery. I actually hear "for English press the return key" while the progress bar is a quarter of the way. However, the progress bar remains at this state. Any ideas?

Also the Mac USB boot drive has the same result as before.

The fact you where able to install Ubuntu - gives me a clue! So we know the SSD its self and the systems connection to it are OK!

What would stop the SSD from working then?? If I install MS DOS or even MS Windows onto the SSD drive it would need the format and file structure it needs which is not the same as what macOS uses. To add confusion! Even macOS has two different file systems presently! The older HFS+ and now the newer APFS!

So you need to first you need to create a bootable OS installer thumb drive following these guides:

How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive

How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive

Using another Mac system, make sure your USB drives are formatted with GUID using Disk Utility following this guide How to format a drive on a Mac

At that point using the Sierra installer boot up your MacBook Air, then accessing the menus open Disk Utility from it again format your internal SSD with GUID. Install Sierra lets see if we can get to this point first! If you can boot up under it you can move on to Mojave. Whats important here is we what to make sure the drive setup with GUID, letting the OS installers to upgrade the systems firmware as Apple now does this within each OS update and install. It is needed to get the system to Mojave as this macOS uses APFS and needs the newer firmware to boot up under it.

I really appreciate the input Dan. I tried doing what you said, remade the bootable USB with GUID as it was setup as MBR before. Sadly the results are the same as before.

Take a snapshot of your internal SSD's disk config within Disk Utility. Post it here for me to see Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag
