LG LM270WQ1 (SD) (BD) backlit replacement

I have a workstation HP Z1 all-in-one with the backlight working partially, in the overall is good but on the left is dimmer. I found online the option to replace the screen but the exact model is impossible to find without moving with hp spare part which is extremely expensive, considering I have taken a refurnished model. The screen is LG lm270wq1 (SD) (BD) and I found a lot of different end code (A1) (B1) (E3), so I want be sure to find the best and cheap way to restore the backlight, are those model compatible? Is there a website where I can buy just the backlight?

Attached 2 pics with the faulty and the serial

I have an HP Z1 with the LG 27" display. It exhibits the exact same "backlight shadow" as shown above.

I've replaced LED backlights in a 50" TV, so I have an idea of what's involved.

My question is, on this panel, are there rows of left and right LED strips behind the panel, or are they just along the top and bottom (edge lit)? Thank you kindly in advance.

door

@Duncan McAllister should be an edge lit monitor but it will depend on what panel they popped in there. Once you remove the back cover check the label and try a search for the datasheet

door

Thank you kindly for your timely response. It's one of the LG LM270WQ variants.

I got the thing apart and there are two LED strips along the bottom edge of the panel. The left strip is shorted -- all the individual LEDs test OK with a meter.

But on startup, the strip just flashes for a second, and then the PSU shuts it off. I removed and resoldered the connector with a hot air station, but no dice. I've ordered a new pair of strips.

I'm going to try to photograph the various steps when I reassemble the panel. I think it would be useful to have a step-by-step teardown of the actual panel itself, with all the different layers. That's one thing I couldn't find anywhere online.

Hi To All that experienced same problem. I have two Z1 and on both, I had the same problem. First time I have to buy a new panel from eBay and the same thing happen after 2 years. The problem is in Poor cooling of the system. LED stripes are at the bottom but they create a loot of temperature and in fime connector that is on LED stripes lose connection and need to be soldered with new material. My friend that has a microscope, soldered them and we now have everything working. So dare is no need to change all panel, just carefully disassembly panel. Anyway you can do anything wrong since your panel is already half useful. For dose that is not careful and skillful for this operation, I suggest not to do it. Be careful to mark all layers and make photos witch goes where and when. Led stripes can be ordered from Aliexpres if you don't want to solder your old one. Hope this will help you. BR

@gabe981 if you are saying that the once you found are

LG lm270wq1 (SD) (A1)

LG lm270wq1 (SD) (B1)

LG lm270wq1 (SD) (E3)

then the only way to determine compatibility is by downloading the datasheet. Armed with that information you can at least check the connections and connector compatibility. It is possible that some of those screens would work. Backlight LED strips are available so check places like this

Thanks @oldturkey03 for your answer, yes I mean those models, Imac screens are more in stock and easy to find respect the HP Z1.

I found this website where there are a lot of technical details on the LG screens, http://www.panelook.com/LM270WQ1-SDDB_LG...

Do you think I need to find out the datasheet only? If so do you know where can I find them?

I was thinking that I should replace just the Lamps with new strips backlight, I ve never done that, I should try out or find some schemes, but definitely is something would reduce the costs as the screen works perfectly.

Thank you again

@gabe981 you would need the datasheet for each one of those. I would try to replace the backlight strips as well. It will be necessary to disassemble the panel but definitely doable. When you disassemble the panel make sure that you skip the diffuser sheets (plastic appeararing sheets) in the proper order as well as the proper direction. Do not mix them up or flip front to back :-)

thanks again @oldturkey03 , I found the datasheet and those models are different in something, probably could work but it is risky. I found online a lot of people with the same issue on all pc assembled with LG monitors, similar serials very used on the Imac 27''. it needs some test but there are 2 option and possible solutions, the first is poor connector solder on 6 pin cable on the left (solution should be redoing the solder and change connector, or try to get a better contact between the cable and the sensor on the screen) the second one should be a manufacturing (again) mistake on the backlight inverter (solution, replace the controller) both cases need more investigation, I am reluctant right now as I need to deliver a job and can't dedicate time, but I will do that. If you can help me can you just suggest where to buy the inverter? I struggle here too, to find the right model, and HP wants to send the workstation to a customer service, which is expensive and takes time,

@gabe981 the inverter should be part of the power board in your monitor. So you'd be replacing that board. The controller board is actually part of the monitor and will be hard to replace (if it is even available) due to the nature on how it is mounted to the panel.

search any display the last two letters do not matter, keep the cables from the display with problems you will need as well as the electronic board with the vga connector

the ones on the older poppy can work without any problem provided the plate is replaced

Hi to All that have the same problem. In most cases problem is that LED stripes are unsoldered from connectors. Carefully disassemble the screen and 2 Stripes are at the bottom of the screen. Be really careful when you try to disconnect cables from LED stripes and later take stripes to mobile phone service or try to do it your self, but they have a microscope with small iron blade soldiers and can connect them properly. This will restore your LED stripes to working conditions in 90% of cases. But for the future, buy some new LED stripes from AliExpress and replace them. I have 2 screens and on both, I needed to solder LED after some time. And they are still working. Just be very careful when you disassemble the screen and record which part goes where. Make photos to record procedures. Best regards Sasha

Hello,

I have a similar problem but I’m not sure about the reason for my non-working display: The display port still works but recently the display itself finally faded out (although it had a temporary comeback in between).

There were some warning signs before, e.g. less brightness in one corner and in general, shortly before breaking. A few times also screen artifacts appeared: The whole display turned dark brownish as if there were a fluid which spread over the display from top to bottom. Anyway, after a restart this wasn’t the case anymore.

So, can anyone give me advice about what to test now systematically ? I didn’t find a plan of the LCD Sync/backlight port pins to measure the voltage.

Regards, macpac

Thank’s for asking, and have great expectation from me. Unfortunately, I’m the only user of 2 Hp Z1 and I had a problem the screen suddenly become darker on one side. After I buy a new one a few years ago on eBay and replaced it, after 2-3 years the same thing happens. I did not throw away the old one and decide to make one working from two that I had. We changed the good one to be in one panel and we have seen that on Bad some wires are disconnected. My friend takes them to Mobilephone repair shop and they properly solder them. Last year I both another HP Z1 for pennies since the screen did not work! And I have replaced the panel with a fixed one, and Miracles appear. The screen is working perfectly and it still works. In the meantime, I have found on Aliexpress that I can buy new LED stripes and don’t need to solder them.

My suggestion is to clean all connections on your screen. Try first with a vacuum cleaner, Use also gentile brush like one from your girlfriend for makeup or compresed air but not strong blow. This will remove dust that maybe is the reason for your problem. In most cases, people don’t clean PC ever. If this doesn’t help use Contact spray and watch that is not draining all ower screen. Use paper tissue on the opposite side to pick up liquid. Live overnight to evaporate and then plug the screen to the power and turn it on. Be sure that you do this when the screen is UNPlague from power and PC. Always live for few hours to discharge and then do the cleaning procedure. If this not help then something else is the problem and you might need to change the display. Hope this will help, and do this when you decide that your screen has “no pulse” and you consider that need reanimation.

Hope this will help!

Thanks for your quick answer, Sasa! The inner side of the PC is rather clean from dust, so I don’t think that this is the problem. Before disassembling the display I would rather check whether the panel components work as they should but I have no specifications - do you?

The problem is that the PC is not usable with an external display after the internal display is deconnected, at least it doesn’t boot anymore. That’s all I know. But I still need to have access to it from time to time. That’s why I won’t disassemble it before it is inevitable.

Hi Gabriele, unfortunately, this is what I know about HP Z1 and the story ends at this point. Sorry, I can’t help more than this. I hope you will find a solution for your PC.
