Can I switch a i5 logic board to a i7

My MacBook is having a kernel panic, i want to know if i can simply swap the i7 logic board into the i5 mac. It will be the same year logic board i want to put in, not trying to upgrade to anything newer. The connections look the same as far i can tell. Thanks

Here is a listing of the possible logic boards your system can use MacBookPro6,2

Any one of these will work swapping out your current board.

With that said, are you sure you are getting a panic due to a hardware issue? More often I see OS or software as the real issue. Why don’t you try creating a bootable external drive and then boot up under it. Are you still getting errors?

I will try that, im currently using gfxCardStatus to switch to intergrated gpu and that works until it switches itself back then it crashes again. I’ll let you know how the external drive works. Thanks

OK that added piece of new info nailed it! You do have a hardware issue.

You are hitting a known issue with this series. A Tantalum capacitor (C9560) within the GPU logic has failed. This is a repairable problem Macbook Pro 2010 kernel panic GPU issue repair: SOLVED! C9560

Thanks for sharing that video. Im going to try and fix the board myself, ive changed a couple components on a circuit board before but nothing this small. We’ll see how it goes. Either way it’s going to need a new board anyway.

If you have in your area someone into Mac repairs at component level the board may be fixed, as it’s due usually to a well known fault along the graphic buffering line. The repair itself is quite straightforward. You can surely upgrade to an i7 board if you prefer, prices have come down and the board, if you find one, has better performance and better graphics too. Besides CPU and graphics, boards are just the same, therefore both iterations share the same issue in the long run. Thus it would be better to buy from someone who offers a decent warranty or had just fixed the board as a prevention measure.

@arbaman I have an early 2015 macbook pro 13” i5 256 with 8GB ram and it is overheating. I need more ram so i am considering the i7 with 16GB ram. Can i buy one and just replace it? Will this replace the graphics card aswell. Im unsure of what gets replaced with the motherboard. Please can you advise me.

@mchelle.diamond Yes, no problem, the i7 for a 2015 13" Pro would fit fine, thus if you can find one you can just replace it and be ready to go. The graphic card and the Cpu on the 13", are shared on the same big main chip, thus yes is the answer to your second question.

Logic board carries most of the Mac electronics, except the ports on the right side and the Magsafe little board.
