MBP randomly shutting down (not restarting) after moving to Spain?

I just moved to Spain from North America, and ever since my laptop has been shutting off randomly.

I do have a used battery (“condition: replace soon”), and I’m not sure if I’m just connecting things, but it seems like it shuts off when someone turns on something power-intensive elsewhere in the household - could it be? Or is this a travel wear and tear problem?

Thank you!

You do have an issue with your house wiring as well as its not able to support all of your power needs. I would recommend getting a good UPS as the first action so your computer and other sensitive devices can get clean power. I would get a APS SmartUPS.

@danj And how exactly did you come up with such weird diagnosis without knowing anything at all about the place he lives and relevant wirings, when he's using a "replace soon" conditon battery ?!?

door

@arbaman - His question tells us!

Spain & "It seems like it shuts off when someone turns on something power-intensive elsewhere in the household"

That still doesn't solve the battery issue within the MacBook Pro system. Once we see the CoconutBattery output we'll have a better idea on the battery.

The MagSafe charger is the only thing keeping the system running. So when the AC power fluctuates the system is effected. If the battery was in better shape it likely would cushion the power sag.

In any case, this is still not healthy for the system over the long haul which is why a UPS is really needed.

@danj We're talking about Spain, not a south american favela..I believe you're missing the hit here.

@arbaman - I had stayed in Corçà Girona, Spain at a nice B&B many years ago. It's a small village on the East coast. We where driving up from Portugal from holiday when I was posted in Dublin.

It was very modern in the furnishings! But, they warned us not to have too many things plugged as the line could be over loaded. Many of these older villages just weren't wired to support all of our power hungry devices as well as the population growth.

Again to be clear Thomas has two issues! Both effect his system.

I'm sure he realizes he has some work with his power service if he owns the property, and if he doesn't he may not have any options than finding a way around it which the UPS would be the way. He still needs the battery replaced.

I posted this here as not to distract from his systems issues.

A north american Mac in Spain is subject to an extreme strain, jetlag to start with, timing is upside down, lunch at 2.30PM , dinner at 10PM, the movida, long nights..uff..enough to kill it.

Replace soon really means it, that message comes out usually when voltage threshold is reached a few times and any power intensive task can cause shutdowns, that’s absolutely normal. Just replace it and everything will be fine 99.9% ;)

Haha I suspected, but some issues:

1. never had this problem literally 2 days ago, even "replace soon" has been showing for the past couple of months

2. the screen switches off, but not the keyboard light. There's no "orange" indicator on the charger ever, always just the green light.

Well, "replace soon" means get ready to see side issues too. Unless you get a new battery it will be a bit hard to figure out if anything else is at play here. If magsafe doesn't turn to amber but battery still charges it may be a glitch I wouldn't care much about. What puzzles me a bit is the screen getting dark but machine still working..that doesn't fit into a faulty battery picture in my experience. Try shining a light to the screen when that happens to check if you still have a dimmed image..backlight is a high voltage circuit and might act up with a low voltage battery, but never experienced it before. Does screen gets back to normal if you plug in the magsafe or after closing and reopening the lid ? BTW, welcome to EU and enjoy Spain, very lively and cheerful country and people :)

Thomas - Here’s what Apple states on battery lifespans Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks

As you can see Apple’s max cycles for your system is 1000 you’ve over shot it by 383 more cycles!

Time for a new battery ASAP!
