Updated Firmware to 2,1 and now won't boot/no chime

2006 Mac Pro 1,1 updated firmware to 2,1. Seemed to work. Shutdown, starts up, fans spin, power button lights solid white. CD drive spins up. No USB.

Tried variations on removing hard drive, video card, rams sticks, etc.

Tried SMC reset on the board, as well as reset of the board.

When I push the diagnostic button on the motherboard, LED #7 doesn’t light up at all, green, yellow or red.

If it’s the PSU, is there a definitive way to test it? Multimeter?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What did you use to update the firmware? Did it complete?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I used the tool from Netkas and yes it did complete. I have installs of Lion and El Capitan and both booted and gave me confirmation of firmware 2,1 on the System Report.

I shut it down and when I tried restarting, these symptoms started.

I have the original card this machine came with and tried with it installed instead of the XT1900 that had been in there with no joy.

Thanks again!

Upgrade Mac Pro 1.1 to 2.1 Firmware. AFTER THIS IS DONE DO A PRAM RESET AND THEN OSX WELL RE-REC BOTH YOUR CPU'S , IF YOU DON'T YOU WELL ONLY SEE 1 CPU .

How to Reset PRAM or NVRAM on a Mac

  • Shut down your Mac.
  • Press the power button.
  • Before the grey screen appears, press the Command, Option, P, and R keys at the same time.
  • Hold the keys until your computer restarts and you hear the startup sound a second time. ...
  • Release the keys.

Sorry, I should have mentioned in my OP, I tried a PRAM reset. But I noticed that I'm not getting any power over USB. Mouse doesn't light up, USB Flash drive doesn't light, etc.

On these Mac Pros the main failures are the power supply then the video card. Generally when the power supply fails it does it slowly, it will start rebooting on its own and the frequency gradually increases. The video card just goes out. I replace the video card with the stock one from the 2009, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120.

I pulled the PSU and tested it with a multi-meter. On the C connector pin #3, there is supposed to be 5v coming through and nothing is coming through. I'm assuming this is this a pretty good indication that the PSU is dead?

I also read that the replacement has to have the same four characters of the serial number. Something to the effect that they are version numbers called the EEE code. Nothing on eBay matches.
