Stuck on apple logo, now fully shorted

Block Image

<- do you think this micro crack can be the issue ?

Hi,

I´ve got iphone 7 plus which was stuck on apple logo, power consumption was 0.80a and occasionaly jumped to 1.5a for a split second.

I left it like that for 2 minutes to see if it will eventualy boot up.

Unfortunately phone died and went to the full short after that and PMIC is extremely hot .

Should this cause PMIC to fail or most probably that is some cap shorted anywhere else without the heat coming out of it ?

I want to make sure before I pull anything from the board.

thanks

We will need more info. You say it went to full short. Did you determine this from your ammeter? First diode mode VDD_Main or hook up a dc power supply and see if it is drawing current before prompt to boot. If it is a VDD_Main short I doubt it would be the PMIC it could be a capacitor or IC. Just because something gets hot doesn’t mean it has a short to ground.

As Chris commented above, more details are always welcome when it comes to remote diagnostics. However, I will say that the PMIC is rarely the failure point on the iPhone 6S & 7 series. If the PMIC becomes excessively hot, it is usually caused by a downstream short. SO start probing the PMIc outputs to determine if there is a short and work your way from there.

Which crack are you referring to? Personally, I don't see one ;>). Do you mean the line at the top-right corner of the PMIC? That's just underfill residue.

Well, I removed every component on PP2V8_UT_AF_VAR and it's still in short . So my guess is pmic

So you removed the 4 components in the pic and it is still shorted? Even if this line was going to ground I would think the phone would still boot. Can you confirm these are the components you removed?

Only the caps, the ones on the other side near the connector as well.
