No backlight on MacBook Pro 13", 2015. Fix or buy a new one?

Hi!

The display on my Macbook Pro 13” 2015-model have been flickering the last couple of weeks, but after starting it up after an updating last night the flickering worsened before the screen went completely black. But the “starting”-sound works, and so does the keyboard and touchpad, but the backlight on the keyboard have been working some on-and-off.

We do not have Apple Store in my country, Norway, but I went to some authorised Apple distributor/repair here. No one listened more than the display being black, and concluded that the display was broken and the hole thing had to be changed, which would cost $840. Not happy about the help I received, I researched myself and found out that the problem is the backlight, so the problem will be connected to the logic board. No one will not give me a price estimate on changing the logic board/components on the logic board, and I fear it would be pricey.

So I have a couple of questions.

1) Have any of you changed/fixed the logic board on your macbook, and what was the price? - My parents are traveling to the US, so fixing it there is an option.

2) Would you choose to change/fix the logic board or just buy a new macbook pro if it was you? The Macbook had the most upgraded specs at the time and did cost $2700. But the battery, only had 400-500 charge cycles, already have to be changed. A new Macbook Pro with wanted specs would be $3150 here in Norway, but buying it cheaper, at “only” $2499, in the US is an option. - Only different is that we have 5 years warranty in Norway, but most of the time they will say it falls outside of the warranty. I am hesitant to buy the new Macbook Pro with the problems it have had with Flexgate and the keyboards.

I decided to go to a unauthorized repair shop in Norway today. He opened the Macbook with me there. We found liquid damage by oil. So luck there as oil apparently is better then water. The liquid damage we found was very little, so he found it odd that it was the reason for the backlight not working, but he concluded that the liquid damage was the reason for the keyboard backlight to be on-and-off that one time. He cleaned the logic board were it was liquid damage. He then tried the now clean logic board on another screen and the backlight worked just fine, but back in my macbook the backlight still didn’t work. He believes it to be liquid damage on one of the connectors on one the cabels that goes from inside the screen and to the macbook.

First we should make sure what your problem is before answering other questions. Flickering or on/off with keyboard backlight has nothing to do with screen backlight. Plug your Mac into a TV or external screen with an adapter and confirm the video is there. Also check with a bright light if you can see a faint image when you shine the light to the screen or from the back of the screen through the apple logo. If you have an image the backlight can be fixed with a component level repair that will cost you a fraction the cost of a used Mac as yours.

No need to go to the USA to fix it, in Europe we are maybe less but, with due exceptions, as good as they are ;)

It works with an external screen and you can see image when putting a flashlight up to the applelogo in the back. Therefor I have concluded that the problem is the backlight.

Fixing it in the USA is mostly an option because my parents are visiting our holiday house to fix some thing with the bank there anyways. So them taking it with them is no problem. Fixing/buying in Europe these days are quite expensive as the norwegian currency is weak compared to most currencies. I have a trip to Budapest coming up, but looking at prices for electronics I don't belive it to be any cheaper to fix it there.

Well, that confirms it's a backlight issue for sure. I have no idea if anyone in Budapest is specialized in Mac repairs. Unless there are parts that need replaced that may change the picture considerably, the cost I usually charge for a logic board repair goes from 100€ to 300€, anything that would go beyond that roof I'd call it not worth fixing considering logic board prices nowadays. I don't think that's more expensive than the US typical costs. Currency fluctuations are not of my concern, as much as I wouldn't put a surcharge if you had a strong currency I wouldn't give a discount for a weak one.

We are a Technician Group, and in personal is better and Cheaper fix you Computer, it's hard for a technician to know what is happening inside without looking it, can be a Liquid Damage Device, Loose Connection or simple Fuse, AVG motherboard repair cost $200.00 up to $500.00 that is more cheaper to get a new Computer. There is a lot of places in USA if they are coming for sure somebody here can fix it. (Sorry for the Span Mr. robot).

Thank you! I know it is impossible to know exactly whats wrong and the price without opening and looking at it. The problem may go on the warranty, there is one year left, but I fear liquid damage, as someone in the household spilt hairoil on the table while the macbook was there without knowing. I don’t have enough time to send it in to them, get to know if I can use the warranty and possible get it back unfixed from the repair shops in time to send it with my parents to the US on wednesday.

From the little I have been told from the authorised retailers it seems like they won't change faulty components on the logic board, just the hole thing. And from old forums the price for this will be $1200 - 1800. And a new battery will be just under $500 here if the warranty won’t cover it, the battery isn’t liquid damage as it have been bad for the last year.
