Smart Cover Locks iPad Air2 from Back Side

the title says it all,

i have looked at the post on here for the ipad air 1, and that refers to a faulty home button cable causing the issue or a cheap copy. i personally have never come across that on the air 1, and i have done a LOT of them.

the issue i am having is with the air 2 since the screen has been replaced.

customer is dropping it back in to me today to have a look at.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is the smart cover official???

I will amend my OP, i forgot to mention that this is since we replaced the screen and digitizer.

it didn't do it prior to the repair.

The little soldered on bit on the air 2 screen is for the sensor for the covers... its next to the home button, look at step 45

@c9679

thanks for that bit of info, i have been curious as to what that little tab was for. i have been putting Kapton tape over it on the replacement screens i have used.

i am always warey of exposed metal pads from the iPad mini repairs. as it would cause the digitizer to play up and jump around.

so my next question, wouldn't a replacement screen already have this fitted? or is it always a transplant job for the new screen.

seems a bit stupid to have to always transplant the part.

so if that isnt present surely the sleep lock feature from the smart cover just wouldnt work at all.. or am i getting this all wrong.

The problem with the smart cover locking when the cover is folded back to behind the iPad is caused by the missing hall sensor which is located on the original screen:

Most replacement screens do not have this but this can be transferred via soldering to a replacement screen. There will be black tape which you can re-use so make sure to peel that off carefully while holding the sensor so that it doesn’t rip when peeling it off.

The other sensor is located on the board but you need both in order for the smart cover to work properly.

Also another thing to note do also add tape (you can reuse from old screen) for the touch ID cable when it is plugged in as it can disconnect itself (had it happen before) months after screen replacement.
