Questions about how to power on this MacBook (MB466LL/A).

Hi, I had purchased this MacBook secondhand as is, and I wanted to find out what was wrong with it because the seller online had mentioned that it would not turn on, however the charging does seem to work. I don’t have access to a charger in my home, but I will probably borrow a friend's.

Anyway, I have tried resetting the SMC on this to no avail, along with cleaning out the dust and grime from the insides plus reapplying thermal paste to the CPU and GPU, with inconclusive results.

The charging does indeed work, so I assume there is no problem with the battery or the MagSafe port.

One method I did try which got my heart pumping, was shorting (I don’t remember which pins to be exact) specified pins on the keyboard slot on the logic board, because the keyboard’s power button appears to be nonfunctional. This got the fan to spin (at full speed) as I held my tweezers onto the pins. (When I removed my tweezers, the computer would shut off). Nothing would appear on the display, but there was hard drive activity (plus loud fan noise).

Could it be be that the keyboard/upper case needs to be replaced, along with the LCD display?

Tl;dr I’ve tried a couple of methods on how to turn on my secondhand MacBook to no avail. I think I’ve verified the logic board and battery/MagSafe port to be working. Shorting keyboard pins does turn on the computer, but no display or keyboard functionality.

Have you tried turning on the macbook with the battery and keyboard disconnected?

When having the battery and keyboard disconnected the MacBook should turn on by itself via the Magsafe charger assuming this is a 13” A1278 a 65W magsafe 1 charger should be used.

If I did that, what would need to be replaced, if anything?

I wouldn't be able to tell you which route to go unless you tried what I said above.

Could be one wire circuit needing troubleshooting which is requires board repair / micro-soldering experience (going through board schematics).

DC-in board needing replacement (small charging board that is easily replaceable). Liquid damage on board this can be checked by visually inspecting the board on both sides for signs of white / green marks near components or blackened burn marks on board.

SMC chip needs to be replaced worst case scenario, if fans are always loud and Mac is running slow.

I was able to get my hands on a 60W charger from my neighbor, but the Mac didn’t do anything after I had followed your instructions. It’s not 65W but I didn’t have high expections for it working anyway. I assume there wasn’t enough voltage to power the machine, due to something.. I will however, be able to borrow an 85W charger tomorrow.

I did try my method from earlier about shorting 2 keyboard pins just out of curiosity and the computer still didn’t display anything (with the keyboard disconnected).

But first, I tried that method without the battery + keyboard and when I touched the two pins, the charger led would flash and the fan would try to spin but not do anything unless the battery was also connected.

I could just need to use a higher watt charger, but hopefully I have more information about my problem.

So, I did get it to power on and I was installing OS X Snow Leopard onto it but the drive I was using was a little slow, so I put an SSD into it, and it stopped powering on. Earlier, when I shorted the keyboard pins, the LED actually came on and the dvd drive did its thing, and the display also turned on. Which I was really happy about. I put it all back together to find out that the power button wasn’t working (but it does work, as I could turn off the computer with it), which was frustrating because I got it to work. I did have a charger, but its owner needed it back so now I don’t have one hahah. But after the drive swap, it reverted back to not turning on. I suspect the SMC is at fault for this, but I’m not too worried anymore because I have got it to boot. I’ll just wait till tomorrow to get a charger.
