from which side of the machine is right and left; top or bottom?

I have a MacBook Pro Late 2008 - Mid 2009 2.4 GHz

One of the fans is making noise like a muffled roulette wheel. I have had problems that led me to believe I needed a logic board replacement. So I tried replacing the logic board. But, the solution was to reset the PRAM (see note below).

I had the logic board in and out of the machine some six times. So I have plenty of experience with taking out and putting the fans in. I don’t know which one would be right and left. Is right and left from the top of the machine or underneith the machine?

Note: I had a display problem originally: Horizontal white stripes and rapid oscillation of the whole display up and down. I was told I needed a new logic board. In the ensuing “adventure” a forum response suggested I reset the PRAM. It fixed the original board even thought I did it while I had a replacement board in the machine.

First I would install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro it will allow you to see what’s happing with the thermals within your system as well as your fans. It will allow you to speed up the fans.

The ‘Left’ is from the perspective of using the system so with the keyboard up (typing away) the ‘Left’ is the left side. Then if you flip your system over with the hinge side away from you the right side is the ‘Left’ This is using the same premise as Stage Left & Stage Right

Have you just tried just disconnecting one fan at a time to see if the noise goes away? Don’t do this too long! As you don’t want to overheat your system (use TG Pro to help you here)

Thank you Dan;

I can hear it from on the left side with the machine upright. The sound is definitely

comming from the side where the input ports (power, USB, etc) are located.

I will look into TG Pro to find out if it really is a problem beyond just the noise.
