Dropped iPhone 7, screen shattered, won't turn on. HELP :(

I dropped my iPhone that already had a small crack in the corner of the screen. On impact, the screen completely shattered and has come off at the top and sides (I can peel back the screen and see the inside between the two metal plates [see picture]). It is still attached on the bottom by the home button. When I picked it up, the phone was unresponsive. Screen went completely black. I plugged it into my computer and opened itunes. It said “itunes has detected a device in recovery mode and you must restore”. All of a sudden, my phone got really hot, and I feared it was the battery. So I quickly unplugged it and took it outside to cool off.

Since then, I’ve tried plugging it into my computer and several wall-outlets with no luck. My mac no longer recognizes the device being plugged into to a USB port under “system report”. Itunes does nothing either when I plug it in. I’ve tried doing a soft and hard reset while the phone is plugged in, nothing. I’ve tried cleaning the lightning port. Nothing.

My question is, how can I get my data back (photos, text messages etc.). I don’t care about saving the phone, I just want my data back. Should I order a new battery and screen and try that? I live in a rural area with no repair shops around.

Don’t waste your time or money on a screen or battery, you most likely have a logic board failure. An experienced micro-solderer should be able to recover your data though it really depends on what failed (some components are irreplaceable).

As for repair, look locally for a reputable shop that does micro-soldering repairs. Ideally, you want to find someone local but good workmanship trumps locality. There are many shops worldwide that do this so you shouldn't have any problems finding them. Talk to them and ask how they do their work. You need to feel confident as you don’t get multiple opportunities to recover data…a dodgy shop or inexperienced tech can do more damage than good.

If you can't find one locally, then consider mail-in repair. There are several reputable micro-solderers patrolling this forum.  You can also click on my profile to learn more about my services, at the very least, it can serve as a data point for your search.

Should I try to open it up first?

What I’d do is try to carefully open it without damaging anything then disconnect the battery, then after that when you have free time go to a local repair shop to see if they will try a spare battery and screen on it to see if that fixes it. Try doing this before worrying about board level issues, that can make you quite worried about your data. But yeah try a new battery and screen first. If it works then great! :)
