VDD_Main short iPhone 7 plus

I have an iPhone 7 Plus that went dead after plugging into a car charger that was plugged into a 12v port on a boat. The 12v port may have had a little moisture in it (it was after a rain), but the phone has NOT gotten wet. After plugging it in to that setup, I returned about 30 minutes later and the screen was black. I could feel the haptic response when pressing the home button but the screen wouldn’t come on, so I tried restarting the phone. It powered off and would not turn back on. It now won’t charge or respond to being plugged into the Usb port on my laptop. An apple service center tried replacing the battery to no avail.

I opened it up to test for a short on vdd_main, hoping it would be a cap I could remove in order to recover data from the phone. I’m reading 22 ohms, which is higher than I was expecting. Does this sound like it could still be a cap, or some other problem? Now sure how to proceed and looking for advice.

Gekozen oplossing

Car chargers are notorious for causing issues with the charging circuit (Tristar).

At 22 Ohms, it appears that the VDD_MAIN line is compromised. I would test it in diode mode to be certain. As for finding the fault, you need to apply a structured process and start testing various main power lines to see if the issue is isolated to VDD_MAIN or if VDD_MAIN is being dragged down by something else. Open up the schematic and start probing the PMIC outputs, preferably in Diode mode and report back.
