iPad home button not working and not charing properly

iPad 2 A1395. I replaced the digitizer and the new digitizer works fine. But I found the following two problems:

  1. Home button stopped working no matter how hard I try;
  2. iPad is not charging properly. When plug in the cable there is no charging icon. However, after a while I can see the battery percentage ramps up, but very slowly, like 2% - 5% per hour when the iPad is on. If iPad is off and I plugged the cable the iPad would turn on as expected, but there is still no charging icon.

I did broke the wifi antenna when trying to pry open the digitizer - the part close to the screws are torn off. But wifi still works so I guess that should be OK?

Could it be a bad docking/charging connector? The connector does affect the home button as well, right (since there are two connection points)? Or can it be a bad connection cable of the digitizer?

This is not a problem with the digitizer. You said yourself that the digitizer works fine. First, make sure all your connections are secure. The problem with the home button is likely that the bracket covering the home button is not secure. It could either be in the wrong spot or it might not be attached to the screen enough. All the home button does is press on a pad underneath it to register a click. As for the charging problem. Not sure what might be going on with that. Maybe the cable isn’t pushed in all the way or loose. You could have also accidentally damaged the ribbon cable when you where taking the screen off.

Thank you, Carlos! That's what I thought. Actually I tried to use the home button bracket directly (which has the button switch and the two connect points). I lifted the digitizer and put the bracket on top of the docking port, making sure the connectors have good touch. Then I push the button switch - there is still no "home button" signal registered. So I began to wonder if it was the connectors on the docking port went wrong, not the ones on the home button bracket.

I didn't touch the docking port cable and it looks good to me. I will try to unplug the cable and plug it again.

On closer inspection of the photos from iFixit, it looks like the charge port cable is also responsible for sending the home button signal. You said the charge port wasn't working so this is likely why you can't register a click. I would first try to re-seat the cable and if that doesn't work then you may need to replace it. It's possible you accidentally shorted the charge port when you where working on the device. Hope it's an easy fix.

First of all it sounds like you bought a bad digitizer. You should use this one from IFIXIT.

iPad 2 Screen Digitizer

Don’t repair anything else until you replace the digitizer. After you replac it let me know what started working and what didn’t so we can work from there.

Thanks. But could you explain how the digitizer affects the charging? Plus this product does not seem to come with the home button assembly. How does it fix it?

As you know the home button is right above the charging port so I am not 100% sure but it sounds like something was wrong with your digitizer you got which is causing the charger not to work. What happends when you lift the digitizer off the case will it charge then?

The digitizer has nothing to do with the charge, a bad digitizer can not make the charge work wrong.

It is more possible that I moved the connector and it was badly connected.

As Carlos says, the home may be wrong and then he does not make contact where he should, without contact there is no home function.
