Juice spillage, mouse pad not working

Last night i was rushing through some last minute homework when disaster struck. I spilt juice all over my laptop. I immediately flipped the laptop upside down to let it drain but foolishly i did not turn it off :/

None the less after leaving it to drain for around 30 minutes and wiping it down it seemed to work perfectly fine…until i turned it off…and it would not turn back on again. I left it till this morning when i found it was still not booting and when i did try to boot it the light would come on but nothing else.

After breaking out the old rice bag trick it was right as rain…except after checking everything worked the trackpad ceased to function. Then it began working again before stopping once more. Everything else seemed fine except the oddities surrounding the mouse pad.

What do i do? I do not have the required tools to dismantle a laptop and i am a broke jobless college student so potentially expensive repairs are a last resort. I also fear that residue left behind from the juice could cause corrosion and could be the reason why the mouse pad has stopped working.

Edit: Two days since spilling juice on my laptop. The mouse pad is now working and everything seems to be functioning correctly, i just have a laptop that smells of tropical flavored juice. I am still worried about corrosion due to residue though.

Hi @britishbiscuit ,

As you know liquids and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the liquid causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the laptop’s operating design and could damage the components.

Rice is good to eat but doesn’t fix the problems caused by corrosion.

Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why

First do not turn on your laptop and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the laptop to minimize further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the laptop and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and any remaining liquid.

Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA.

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the laptop might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop which may be of some help in opening it and cleaning it

On p.73 item #3 you’ll find the part numbers (FRU No.) for the touchpads that are available for the various laptop model variants. If your touchpad has failed and needs to be replaced search online using the appropriate part number only in the search box of your browser to find suppliers of the part. The part number is usually stamped somewhere on the part itself if you wish to verify that you are using the correct one in your search.

If this process seems too daunting, take your laptop to a reputable, professional laptop repair service experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Unfortunately you might need to back up your information if you can to a USB or an external hard drive as soon as possible if your able to get the machine up and running again. You computer uses eMMC memory so it may not be possible for you to swap your memory into another machine(unless you have soldering skills). Your best bet is to see if you can find a junker on craigslist running win 7 or 8 and then work on saving up money for a replacement machine.

-Best of Luck!
