iPhone X cameras and flashlight don't work after drop

My 1-year-old got a hold of my wife’s iPhone X and dropped it onto hard tile and now her front and rear cameras just show black and the flashlight will no longer turn on. It all was working before the drop. She has it in a case with a screen protector and it only fell from child standing height, so I’m not sure what could have rattled loose. We did try rebooting the phone a few times with no luck. Tonight I opened it up with my iFixIt kit, but I didn’t see anything obviously broken. The only sign of damage is a hairline crack on the rear camera module between the flash and the edge. I unplugged all the ribbon cables and re-seated them. The phone still boots up just fine and everything else works including FaceID, but still no cameras or flash. Could this be some other cable I’m missing that rattled loose, or maybe a crack in a PCB? I’m also wondering if a new rear camera module would fix it. Thanks for any thoughts.

UPDATE: FaceID was working, but now it says it has disabled itself due to a problem. We have already replaced the phone, so I may dig a little deeper without fear of totally killing it :)

UPDATE 2: I did a hard reset (volume up then down then power hold). Now FaceID works again as well as the front camera. The rear camera and flash are the only non-working parts now. I might go ahead and try replacing the camera.

That's a piece of good news, keep us posted on the outcome, it's always useful info.

FINAL UPDATE: I replaced the rear-facing camera with a new one (from iFixIt), and it worked like a charm! Everything is once again fully operational. It's crazy how a busted camera can cause so many symptoms.

It can happen when a component gets smashed that it gets internally shorted and jams the relevant lines it's connected to. Good to know everything works now :)

How and where?

I don’t have much experience specifically on iPhone X boards, but when both cameras are involved it’s usually a board issue as what the two have in common is just power lines. Thus a rear camera replacement is a risky replacement that might not be worth attempting considering the camera price. In my opinion the potential benefit vs. the expense goes against a DIY approach as in the end you’ll probably need handing your phone to a microsoldering Pro in any case.

Try sending images through watsapp to a group or individual. It would fail to send and watsapp will freeze for sometime and then crash. Try doing this few times forcefully. You will notice that the camera would have started functioning now. Also, flashlight should also work! This trick worked for me.

This actually works !! Just worked for me too but my front camera still doesn’t work unfortunately

Can you please elaborate on this, Ashwath and Tash? Do I try to keep taking pictures from the back camera and send them to a person on WhatsApp? And then what?

Why was it that the flash stopped working as well? Curious since those are separate parts. Same thing happened to my wife’s phone and debating on replacing the camera module…

I believe when iOS detects a camera hardware problem, it just shuts down the whole camera module, including the flash. Perhaps they are on the same power bus and this just prevents more damage. Kind of speculating here.

Yes, if you remove camera and turn iphone on, flash doesn't work.

Same problem here, my front camera is black out but everything else including rear camera , flash, face ID are working fine.. I tried DFU mode and IOS update, nothing works. The phone was dropped and back glass is broken not the rear lens though. I got new front camera but still the same. After reading this I am thinking may be rear camera internal issue causing this issue, going to try rear camera replacing.

Try 3D touching your flash and swipe up and down reducing and adding it’s brightness
