MBP suddenly dead and does not turn on

I’m trying to figure out what happened with my brother’s macbook. One day the book was extremely freezing during regular web surfing and brother decided to hard reboot.

Finally, the mbp doesn’t power on. Battery charging indicator does not blink/light up even one circle.

No luck:

  • Reset SMC
  • Reconnect battery
  • Change battery
  • Start without batter (just power adapter)
  • Place a short between powerpads

What I’m curious about is on attached photo:

Does transistor next to power pads look good? If it is a clue what is the optimal solution - simply replace logic board with one from ebay (which obviously was in used) or get a repair in a service center?

Thank you in advance.

Does the bigger picture make sense?

Update (03/20/2019)

Due to some unforeseen circumstances I just got back to the topic.

After cleaning with alcohol now SMC area looks like:

Fortunately, I was able to power the laptop up. Unfortunately, it does not boot up:

I was trying a lot to reset SMC, NVRAM&PRAM - no luck. Recovery Mode does not boot as well.

I filmed all boot progress. Should I upload on youtube or previous picture is enough to diagnose the death of SMC?

Thank you in advance.

It adds a wider view of general conditions which seem pretty good to me but I still see a whitish spot at the bottom of the SMC, but I can't tell what exactly is..can you ? If it's oxide it needs to be cleaned with some alcohol, but there's not much I can suggest at this point without a thorough inspection. What we see is the bottom side of the Mac..if there was any liquid from the top the other side of the board needs to be checked too.Reballing or replacing SMC should be seen as a last resort, not the first step.

Thank you very much! I will try to clean SMC and let you know.

Gekozen oplossing

Don’t know if it’s just a matter of lighting, picture is not so detailed, but the bigger IC there is the SMC and on the bottom of it there seems to be some dirt/corrosion ? If that’s the case the culprit might be right there..has there been any liquid damage at some stage ?

Was dit antwoord nuttig?

No, at least my brother did not confess to me ;)

So, the better choice is try to reball SMC or simply replace?
