Dead, power supply's green light very dim, alive under circumstances

So a friend of mines brought me his old MB Air A1304 (Late 2008). No sign of life. The green light of the power supply is on, but just a pale green. Things we have tried:

  • usual SMC and PRAM reset
  • battery is dead, but last time he used it as it still worked, it wasn’t charging (the MBA has been dead for many months now, so at this point the battery must be considered as dead)
  • Power supply (85W) is in perfect condition, and I tried different ones already: no change.

I was able to switch on the MBA using a dangerous procedure I’ve read on another post, which is: disconnect the power supply, disconnect the battery, press the power button for at least 10 seconds, while still pushing the power button reconnect the power supply and then reconnect the battery. At that point, releasing the power button and pressing it again, the MBA came to life. The fan spins at its maximum all the time, and as I switch off, I need to repeat this procedure if I want to get a working machine again. Which is obviously boring.

I’ve been told that the machine has been serviced before because of this problem and I see a jumper wire close to the power connector. But it didn’t solve the problem, as it seems.

What should I look for? Any help is appreciated.

Sadly your power control logic on the main logic board is damaged. There is a set of MOSFET’s that get damaged from a bad MagSafe cord or static discharge. You’ll need to find someone with microsodering skills and access to the needed parts to fix your logic board.

Or, you can replace the logic board. If you do that you should also replace the MagSafe charger.

Given the age of this system you might want to think though the costs before going to far.

P.S. You likely need a new battery as well
