Can iMac be powered up with out LCD?

I have removed the LCD panel to repair the CCFL. While I await delivery of the CCFL is it safe to fire up the system w/o the LCD connected and use the ext display?

Yes, the iMac will behave normally with no display attatched. As long as you have the correct video adapter (Mini-DVI to DVI/VGA) you can use an external display without the internal one.

Cool! I'll give it a whirl now

Hmm seems not to work

Is the computer making the startup noise? It may boot the first time with a white screen, but once Mac OS X Loads, it should properly configure and reconize the display. What problems are you experiencing?

door

The system didn't boot correctly. No boot chime etc. It was making the start up chime previously though with the LCD attached. I tried a couple boots to no avail.

Thats odd. I can say with certianty that older (White Intel) iMacs will function normally without a display attatched. Maybe aluminum models don't?

I have the internal LCD display disconnected inside my Mid-2007 20" iMac (EMC2133). I did this to improve overall graphics performance on my external monitor, and to save power on the unused screen.

While some online posts suggest you need to disconnect the inverter, LVDS and display data connectors, I had success simply disconnecting the display data connector -- it's the one just below the panel that has two T6 torx screws holding it down. My Mac booted up just fine, no diagnostic light issues or other complaints at all.

This question is not answered. Can anyone describe a way to run an iMac without the internal display attached at all? Thx!!! Ps. I have read it's impossible, but not from iFixit.

@herojig - Your system is much newer! This is a very old series 2007 Vs your 2012 system. What you could do back in the day is not possible with the newer i-Series CPU's.

Sadly you can't run the system without the SMC messing you up.

door

@danj thx for confirming. I can see why at a low level SMC would check for display, and if not, $@$* down. But if I could figure out a shunt, I could rehouse the monster into something smaller.

door

@herojig - Sadly you don't have any options. There just isn't any way to do that.

How about selling your system for parts to get some money out of it and buying a used Mac mini.

door

@danj ha, exactly what I did...

any chance that early 2009 24" model would start in a 'headless' mode?
