What do I need to fix my Joy Con Directional Buttons?

A few months back, I had been gifted a used pair of neon Joy Cons. They look great, but the left (blue) JC needs some work. Previously, the left directional button was only partially responsive, working maybe 1-out-of-5 times I needed it to. After using a soft bristle toothbrush and some WD-40 Electronic Contact Cleaner to try to clean around the button and inside the recess, it has now become completely nonresponsive. If the rest of the joy con is functioning normally, what components (not including tools, which I have) will I need to fix this myself? I don’t want to have the wrong parts, nor do I want to be missing parts I’ll need.

Hey @daewok!

It sounds like you could have one of two problems:

  1. The left button contact is bad (or has something stuck to it). In this case, you would just need to replace the button itself—you can find sets on Ebay or Amazon for pretty cheap, and follow this guide for the repair.
  2. The contact pad on the motherboard could also be bad, in which case you would need to replace the whole board (which is also pretty cheap on Ebay). We don’t have a specific guide for a motherboard replacement yet, but the steps are the same as shown in the button removal guide.

The Joy-Cons are actually pretty easy to work on, as long as you’re careful and stay organized! I hope this helps, let us know how it goes and if you have any more questions.
