No backlight after taptic replacement

Hi all,

After replacing the taptic engine of my iphone 7, the screen does not have backlight anymore. You can slightly see the screen when you look at a certain angle. I did not remove or disassemble the screen when replacing the taptic. What could cause this problem?

If you did not disconnect the battery/discharge the device after disconnecting the battery, this could have led to a short on the board that damaged your back light. In this scenario, you’d need a new screen. To discharge a device, hold down the power button for at least fifteen seconds after disconnecting the battery.

The actual backlight rarely gets damaged....the issue is probably just logic board related as you suggest.

But how should logic board got damaged by dont do anything with the screen. I just replaced the taptic engine. Damaged logic board needs to be fixed by microsoldering right? Hope to hear from you.

Why would u need to discharge the phone after unplugging it’s power. Ya there is likely a small amount of power in the components. But this is negligible at best.

I’ve repaired 100s of devices and have never held the power button mid repair after I unplugged the battery once. Not a single issue. If anything this issue u describe is something that happens rarely like 1/100,000 or more.

Therefore the screens likely fine probably a motherboard failed part. If I’m wrong so be it, but doubt it. All he needs to do is test the screen on another device of the same series to check perhaps a family members phone.

Just ask when there watching tv or something to borrow it for troubleshooting. Simple. Then he can go from there to see if replacing user replaceable parts works or if he will need to go to a repair shop to test the whole phone for the issue.

Hey @palbo, if it is motherboard damage yes it would likely need micro-soldering. @therealist is right, the shorts are rare but they do happen, it happened twice at both my store and another store not far from here this month. Never happened to us before, but happened twice in one month. Luckily, in these instances, we didn't need to do anything on the board, as just the screen was damaged from the short. I know it seems unlikely since you were just replacing the taptic engine, but it happens. I would try ordering a replacement screen, one you can return if it doesn't fix your issue, and see if it helps. If not, you'll likely need to take your phone in for a board repair.

I would check the screen flex first where it bends through 180deg. its very easily torn, could be the slightest of nics, also try a new screen if you can.
