Can I install 3 SSDs by replacing the optical drive?

Hi,

I already have 2 SSDs in my iMac (iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429, 2011), one is replacing the original HD (with the thermal probe) and the second one is behind the optical drive. Can I remove the optical drive and install a 3rd SSD? Do I need any special parts if this is possible (like the thermal probe) ?

Thank you!

Tom

While its theoretically possible I don’t think you’ll gain that much as the Optical drive port is only SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). I would put in a large 2.5” SATA II HDD instead or just leave the optical drive.

Basically, you’ll use the iMac & Mac mini Dual Drive Enclosure following the optical drive swap out iMac Intel 27" EMC 2429 Optical Drive Replacement. Don’t forget you’ll need a drive that runs at SATA II (3.0 Gb/s)

How about just getting a bigger SSD, swapping out your oldest drive with it. Bigger SSD’s are faster!

Thank you Dan for your very fast reply!

I thought the optical bus was also SATA III, but if it’s SATA II, it makes no sense to connect an SSD.

All the best,

Tom
