Upgrade NVIDIA Geforce GFX card & upgrade CPU?

I’ve been asking a lot of questions here lately, sorry for clogging up the system!

I’ve been pondering what to do with this iMac, make it a monitor for my MacBook Pro or totally max it out and make it somewhat usable in 2018/19. I know it’s almost the end of the line for this iMac but I want to get at least a few more years of work out of it before it’s obsolete.

I just wanted to know if it’s possible to upgrade the GFX card, and if it’s possible to do that what is the highest you can go for a GFX card spec-wise?

Another question I have is what is the highest you can go CPU-wise? It appears that I have a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU right now. I’ve seen threads here asking if a Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor would work but there was not definitive yes or no answer to this question.

Sadly your system is limited to El Capitan OS-X 10.11.x as Core 2 Duo CPU’s are limited to 32 bit as the systems BIOS (EFI) is not 64 bit clean. As long as you understand this is as far as it will go I would just focus on Maxing the RAM and upgrading the drive to a SSD.

If you really want to upgrade the CPU you are limited to what Apple used in this series iMac9,1. I’m not sure if it will support the Intel 2.8 GHz Core 2 Extreme (X7900). It won’t support the Intel 2.53 GHz Core 2 Extreme (QX9300). Frankly, I don’t see this as that beneficial given the limits of the rest of the system.

I currently have Mojave running on the iMac right now so I don't see the 32 bit thing being a huge issue. I've currently maxxed the memory and have plans for a SSD upgrade (possibly dual drive format). One thing you didn't answer was the GFX card question, can I upgrade the GFX card further or is what I have (see image in question) the farthest I can go?

Sadly, no real options thats any better. You can get a NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 with 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory to replace your NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 or GeForce 9400 with 256 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory MXM board which is a minor jump.

Mojave is really not a good idea on this system. While using a thunker service allow one to do it, its memory footprint is quite large and the constant thunking to get the 64bit apps to work also stresses the systems CPU. Then there is the issue of APFS! Don't run it. If you upgrade your HDD to a SSD the installer by default will upgrade the HFS+ to APFS which will make a mess.

So the bottomline here you're over reaching what this system really can support. Stick with El Capitan OS-X 10.11.x.
