Why does it say "close tray", when the tray IS closed?

My Xbox 360 started displaying the message “close ray”, after I’d just got done putting a game on the tray and closing it.

It keeps saying “close tray” when the tray is already closed.

I have seen here the question asked and answered as to why the Xbox 360 says “open tray” when the tray is already open, but not my problem, the opposite issue.

Hello, I think your belt doesn’t handle the torque to fully close the tray, the last movement of closing it completely require more power.

This is how it works, there are two pulleys one on the motor and the other on the tray ( there is a little mechanism in between but that doesn’t matter), to transfer the rotation of the motor to the tray pulley we use a belt, this one needs to have a good coefficient friction otherwise it will transfer less power, in your case I think you have a problem with this coefficient because it degrades by time, you can easily replace the belt (in most cases) and it’s very cheap.

To me this sounds like a worm motor issue inside the drive deck. It has been able to read games in the past and it started saying close disc drive recently right? The reason why I think this is because the worm motor is the part of the drive that opens and closes the drive, and it might not be closing all the way even if it looks like it is closed. Are you familiar with drive deck replacements, because that would be the easier fix. You would need to replace the entire drive but make sure you swap your old drive PCB over to the new one. If you want to replace just the worm motor, you can do that too, but it is a little more tricky.

Any rough ball park figures on cost of either option? Cheaper than another Xbox 360?

And if I chose to go either route, any rough idea *where* I would start; to purchase the parts?

And have it done, as I'm not mechanically inclined?

I think it would be much easier to swap drive decks if you don't like getting too deep in electronic repair. But make sure you swap your boards. There are different drives for every Xbox 360 motherboard revision. If you take a picture of the power socket on the back of the Xbox 360 (socket where the power cord plugs into) I can determine your motherboard type and then determine your drive type. New drive decks are around $25-$30. Tutorial can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69zThcxl...

The process is almost the same, but all you would need to do is swap the PCB's and you're good to go. But before any of this, we need to determine your drive type. Post a picture of the power socket and I can tell you which drive you need to order.
