No Power, No Charging, No iTunes

Hi everyone, I need some help please with this iPhone

It's the 3GS 16GB, it does not power up, and does not charge, and it is not recognised in iTunes, it is basically dead!

this has happened after a cheap copy chinese wall charger was used to charge the phone, this is 100% sure because it has done the same to my wife's iphone!!

I have tried to press and hold home and power button, also tried, holding the home button and connect to iTunes, but Nothing!!

Anyway, I have opened it up, dismantled it, tested the battery with a voltmeter and it shows 0.12V, a good battery should show 3.7V

So I have bought a new battery and I have tested it before fitting, and it showed 3.7V on the voltmeter,

After fitting the new battery, the iPhone switched ON, battery showing 40%, but it still does not charge and is not recognised in iTunes, also, the slide button on the screen does not work, so I can't get to Home screen.

After 1 hour, same problem, iPhone does not switch on, does not charge, opened it again, tested the new battery and it shows 0.14V, so it is drained!!

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

What should I do next?

Thanks in advance

i have changed the charging dock this morning and put another new battery and made sure all connections were ok.

iPhone switched on but same thing, the slide doesn't work, i put another digitiser/lcd assembly and same thing!

Also, on the screen, there was a warning triangle, with a message: the iPhone has to cool down before it can work", this wasn't there before.

my other question is: on the motherboard, next to the warranty sticker that says do not remove, there is a flexible connector pin, is that meant to make contact with the frame?

Thanks

Hi Karim, have you solved this problem? my iphone 3GS is also not charging not starting and it is dead. please help the solution you implemented

Have you checked your fuses. Have you replaced your battery? Have you checked the dock connector? If the fuses are good and you have a new battery, it is possible that you need to replace the power management IC or reflow your logic board. Make sure that you checked for any damage to your board.

Hi

No, i didn't, i changed the battery and dock connector and the problem was still there, i ended up selling the phone to a repair shop, they know what to do, it is an IC on the motherboard that needs changing and i didn't know how to do that so i gave up !

karim, since you have replaced the battery and the dock connector and hoping you did a flawless job on it, check the fuses and see what you get. The "slide button" could be totally different issue. Possibly need to reset the flex cable and/or a new digitizer. Just as an update, I posted another one of my pic's for fuse location left is 3G right is 3GS. Dimensions are 3GS fuse is 2mm x 1.20mm and the 3G one is 1mm x 0.30mm approximately. This information is from my notepad and not sure where I got it from, but I do believe it is from one of the forums. So I would like to give credit to the anonymous author ;-) Based on these specs the appropriate part number (Littelfuse Inc) seems to be 0435002 for 3G and 0467002 for 3GS. A small note about 3GS: the above fuse size is 0603, a little smaller of the original. The correct size is 0805 (2012 Metric), but unfortunately Littelfuse doesn't have this size available. An alternative could be MFU08052 from Vishay/Beyschlag Inc. Good Luck

Hi, sorry me again

i wanted to add that this problem happened because we have used a cheap copy chinese charger!

how can i test the fuse please?

Thanks

karim, the picture of the fuse location is attached to the original answer ;-) You test the fuses for continuity with a multimeter. http://www.electronicrepairguide.com/how... explains that a bit better and it has pictures. The only difference here is that your board has SMT fuses but same principal. Good Luck

Hi oldturkey03

Thanks again for your help, and sorry i didn't see the picture before i posted my last question

That picture is for the 3G, cause my board is different, it is the 3GS, i can see the battery fuse and i tested and it is OK, shows continuity.

Let me try and find the charging fuse, if you have a picture of the 3GS board that would be great

Thanks very much

Hi oldturkey

i have tested the battery fuse and also the other 2 at the bottom, and they are all good, all show continuity

so i think the problem is not the fuse, not the battery,, not the charging dock!

it's getting complicated!...

any other ideas?

Thanks very much

Totally bizarre guys. I GOT IT WORKING!!

Had the exact same issues as everyone else.

Thought it must be the battery. Changed it.

Tried to power on get the apple logo then disappears.

Tried holding power and navigation button screen blinks then nothing.

Tried this several times. Then it occurred to me.

Hold the power button on the apple logo comes up keep holding it till the apple logo goes away. WAIT for a few more seconds...

Now WHILST holding the power button STILL press and hold the navigation button and keep holding it.

It will then showup the apple logo again keep holding it....

The screen goes blank (it does not blink)

Then the connect to itunes screen comes up and its business as usual restore method.

Hope this helps people.

'Hey folks, what you have to do is reset the main fuse, go to youtube, type in iphone not turning on or charging, and you will find the Englishman that shows you the step to resetting the fuse, good luck

Update

If you have a cheap charger it will over heat and shut of the main fuse, and there is only one way to fix it, have to pull of the front screen, only do this if you have a bit of knowledge about electronics or just cell phones, but this will only work if your phone won't power up, won't charge and iTunes won't recognize it, go to youtube and you will get lots of tips on cell phones. "GOOD LUCK to all"
