MacBook Pro fans running hard but temperatures are OK

Hi,

I have a 17-inch Late-2011 Macbook Pro. It’s fans have started running hard as soon as it starts up, and the machine is running VERY slow.

I’ve:

  • reset the SMC and PRAM
  • removed and cleaned the fans
  • removed and cleaned the logic board and heat sinks and have applied fresh thermal paste to the CPU, AMD GPU, and two other chips that have thermal pads
  • Run the “Mac Fan Control” application to check the temperature sensors, and the temperatures appear to be OK. The CPU cores are at 38C, the Platform Controller Hub is at 43C, the SSD is at 32C and most other sensors are in the 20’s and 30’s Centigrade. The memory slot sensor is somewhat high at 53C, but I *think* even this would not be too high/problematic. The app says the left fan is running at 5500rpm and the right fan at 5500rpm.

I’m at a loss to figure out what’s causing the problem, Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Adding images from TGPro and CoconutBattery, as requested:

There appear to be no temperature readings from the “GPU Diode” and “GPU Proximity” - maybe this is the problem? Or is it because the built-in Intel GPU is running and the discrete AMD GPU is not?

Disable Mac Fan Control and instead install this app TG Pro it will allow you to see the thermal sensors and/or the fan's tachometer as one or more is having a problem. Take a snapshot of the main window showing all of the sensors and post it here for us to see Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag

Also run this app so we can check the battery CoconutBattery and paste a snapshot of it as well.

OK, please see updated question that now includes the requested images. Thanks for your help!

No, your GPU doesn't offer thermal info hence the N/A. As both fans are running at a high speed I'm suspecting you have some damage around the SMC logic or the SMC chip has a problem.

Thanks Dan. Whatever the exact cause, it sounds like replacing the logic board is the only solution - which is what I suspected. :-(

@dek832 - While thats one direction I do think you can still recovery yours. Do keep in mind these logic boards are getting hard to find (working).

While I can sympathize, we all don't have the skills or access to the needed info and parts to get into logic board repairs (I even count my self as one of them, other than the very simple tasks)

You can find people out there that do have the ability to fix yours. What part of this blue marble do you live? Maybe I can aim you to someone.
