How to unscrew 3 of my t6 screws on my fans on MacBook Pro 15 in A1286

I’m not entirely sure if my screws are stripped but I was trying to replace my keyboard and i’m trying to take out the two fans. I was able to take out two screws from my left fan and one from my right. However attempting to take out the rest doesn’t seem to work. I’m using a Pentalobe T6 screwdriver to help fix this but I’m not really sure what else to do from here.

How about telling us your exact machine because different MacBook Pros used different screws.

@mayer I've updated in the title with the model number A1286. The FCC ID is QDS-BRCM1055 and the IC is 4324A-BRCM1055.

What is happening when you try to unscrew them. Is the driver turning but the screws are not? And do you feel the driver getting a good grip in the hole?

There are a few possibilities:

  1. The screw is stripped, as you suggested
  2. The screw is a security screen and requires a TR6 (basically, has a small hole in the center of the head to accommodate a bump out in the center of the screw)
  3. The screw is stuck (I’ve had this issue before and had to work at it a bit to get it undone, which is always nerve-wracking as I don’t want to apply too much pressure to damage anything)
  4. It’s the wrong size driver for the screw

If the screws are stripped, there are a number of ways to try and remove them (with tools, pliers, etc.). iFitIt has a guide on removing stripped screws here: Hoe verwijder je een doorgedraaide schroef?

The screw driver turns but the screws don't. It doesn't have that same easy feeling when you turn it because with the other t6 screws i took out from the fans it felt a bit heavy but came off whereas this one doesn't. As for the possibilities you mentioned.

1. I feel like this might be it but I find it unusual that half of them are like this on the fan and the others arent

2. Why are some of the screws a security screen and the others aren't on the fan.

3. Interesting not sure how that happened but def a possibility

4. All the screws looked the same size to me but don't quote me on that

In any case I'm not really all that experienced in taking apart hardware and not entirely sure what to do from here

I agree, it doesn't make sense for some to be security screws and others not. And generally Apple puts security screws on the external enclosures, but not after that. It is also possible for screws to appear the same size, but have different sized slots. Although again, why some would be one and others another in this situation is a bit of a mystery. If anyone else has worked on the laptop, they could have misplaced or mixed up the screws.

I would start by trying to shine a good light into the screws and use a magnifying glass of some type (sometimes taking a picture with a high res camera or phone and then zooming in can work).

I'd also try some different sized and shaped bits (if I couldn't make them out). If they look stripped, it's possible they are hex.

(I added the iFixIt guide to my original comment so it's easier for others to see in the future if they come to this thread.)

Also, there are all kinds of tools specifically for stripped screws special bits, etc.

Those screws should be Torx 6 not Pentalobe 6.

Ok but how come I was able to get half of them out of the fan and not the other half? Maybe half were Torx 6 and the other half were Pentalobe?

If they are loose, the Pentalobe may work.
