Trying to identify error with keyboard

I’m having trouble with an old MacBook Air.

Some keys (about 20 all around the keyboard) completely shut the MacBook down. It’s like there’s a short circuit or like pushing the reset button on an old PC.

I tried to clean some of the keys I can reach by removing the battery, but that doesn’t have any effect. I can rule out real water damage, though it might have been cleaned with some damp cloth.

Now I’m wondering if I should get a new keyboard (and try to replace it), or if there might be a change, that the keyboard connector on the back of the trackpad might simply be stained. Or if there are some other part I should check first.

Replacing the keyboard seems to be the most complicated repair that can be done, so I’d like to avoid that.

Thanks for any ideas or advice!

Thanks a lot for helping to identify the error, everyone! I’ll try the keyboard replacement. If that does fail, using the SSD with an external case will surely be the backup option.

The Air isn’t my working machine at home or at the office, so I can try to repair it myself without a big risk of things failing. I got the tools need already and have seen some replacement keyboard offers for about 30 Euro. Might take some weeks before I find the time, but I’ll write a short note here how everything worked out!

Sorry Guy if pressing on any of the keys causes the system to shutdown your keyboard is indeed failing. Basically the key is shorting to ground. You’ll need either a new uppercase or if you’re skilled enough replace the keyboard assembly alone.

You do have a tough decision here: Spend the effort and costs trying to fix your system or just jump to the newer model.

Your SSD drive can be salvaged into an external drive using a case OWC Envoy Case which you can often find on Amazon or eBay used. So depending on its size it might be worth it.

You’ll need to use either Bluetooth or USB (using a USB to TB3 dongle) to transfer your stuff over with the new Air.
