How can install a Samsung 970 EVO into a MacBook Pro 2012?

I purchased a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro on eBay last week because of the ability to upgrade hardware on it. I purchased 16 GB memory, and a 500 GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD.

I’m nearly out of disk space after re-installing of OS-X, and an upgrade to Mojave, etc.. I was searching online and I read I can add another drive in place of the CD drive. Which seems perfect since I have an Apple USB superdrive already.

I searched Amazon for another Samsung SSD, and found a Samsung 970 EVO. One person said: “Super fast on Mac Pro 2010!” So I made an impulsive purchase after seeing that.

What adapter will I need in order to connect this into my mid 2012 MacBook Pro?

Update (11/02/2018)

I have the 13" and I already have a Samsung 860 EVO, it’s the drive I'm using right now.

I was really impressed with the 860, and when I saw the numbers being 7 times faster in some places with the 970, I need to have it!

Plus, I needed more disk space.

I changed your system info to reflect your system Vs the drive. Do you have the 13" model or the 15" model?

Are you sure you ordered the Samsung 970 EVO drive? Or did you order the Samsung 860 EVO. Your system requires the 2.5" SATA Samsung 860 EVO SSD. You may need to return the drive.

Sorry guy square peg, round hole problem ;-{

The 970 is a M.2 drive as well as being a PCIe/NVMe drive, it won't even work in your system as your system is strictly SATA based.

Here’s a useful diagram

Your system is legacy the Red path on the left.

You'll need to return it and get either a larger Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SSD or a second 2.5" SSD to satisfy your storage needs using the Optical drive carrier

thank you for your help! I have started the return to amazon, and have been trying to find a way I can make this macbook pro as fast as possible... i have an old imac, so i am planning on taking out the 500gb samsung 860 EVO, and placing it in my iMac. I can get two 512gb Samsung 860 PRO ssd for $20 more than the 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO. And when I get them, I would like to combine them with RAID 0. I will post a separate question shortly about how to accomplish that.

@bangerang - Hold that thought! The way the SSD is designed also effects its speed. The PRO version is faster than the EVO version Stroage Review - Samsung 860 EVO SSD Review. In addition the larger models are also faster! A 1TB is faster than the 500 GB and the 2TB is faster than the 1 TB.

So I would go with two Pro models and I would go with the 1 TB size setup in a RAID if you want the max performance this system can handle. That as far as you can go!

Now the bad news! You'll need to stick with Sierra as it's the last version of MacOS that offers RAID support at this time! High Sierra doesn't work and so far Mojave doesn't support it at all (it was pulled in the docs!)

This is what you need, also includes a cable for using the superdrive as external source: Unibody Laptop Dual Drive

That unibody dual drive doesn’t look like it will work with this…

Correct! the 970 EVO won't fit and as it's a NVMe drive won't work at all.

Ouch..would have never imagined that was the kind of drive you had purchased..well @danj explained all already =;)
