Startup repair recovery screen

The unit was sitting unpowered and unplugged for a few years. When booting PC the system detects an error and goes directly to a start up recovery screen and the on screen options are to start the recovery or cancel.. The problem is I can’t use the touch screen and the mouse and keyboard are not being detected either.. Trying to figure out what happened.. The keyboard and mouse are wireless and the system is a 320 not a 300

Hi @toneman ,

Given that it has been idle for a few years, try replacing the non rechargeable CMOS coin cell battery with a new one, (they usually have a life span of 5-7 years and its’ most likely depleted) and then see if it starts OK. Removing the battery also has the effect of resetting the BIOS back to its’ factory default settings which may help if there were any corrupted settings preventing correct startup.

I realize that you said that you have a Touchsmart 320 but here’s a close up image of the battery, taken from the ifixit HP Touchsmart 300 Removing back panel and components to to get to CPU guide at Step.13 (also seen in Steps.11-12). Hopefully your model is not too much different as to the battery or its location and the guide will be of some help to you to gain access to the battery in your model.

Also, try using a USB keyboard and/or mouse to see if that works for you to navigate through the PC.

Hi @toneman ,

Did a USB keyboard and mouse work?

Nothing will work. I can't use the touchscreen and the mouse and keyboard will not work.. I did leave out the cmos battery for awhile but still can't select any of the screen options that say recover launch or cancel

Hi,

I don't know if the following will work but you've got nothing to lose by trying it, only a bit of time.

1. With the power disconnected from the PC, remove or disconnect the HDD from the PC.

2. Connect a wired USB keyboard and a wired USB mouse to the PC.

3. Reconnect the power and start the PC and check if you can get into BIOS.

If you can't get into BIOS this way then I don't know what else to try.

If you can get into BIOS this way, then alter the boot options to boot from USB 1st., if there is a Legacy USB option in BIOS enable it or if none if there is a CSM option enable it, save changes to BIOS.

4. Create an appropriate Windows version USB recovery drive. This requires a 8GB flashdrive and about 60 minutes of time. The recovery drive can be created from any known working Win 8.1 or Win 10 PC. (depending on what OS is installed on your PC at the moment. in the host PC go to Control Panel > Recovery > create a USB recovery drive and follow the prompts.

5.Once you have the USB recovery drive, disconnect the power from the PC and reconnect the HDD to the PC, insert the USB recovery drive into a USB port on the PC (+ USB mouse and keyboard as well, if not enough USB ports the mouse will do).

6. Reconnect the power and start the PC and hopefully it will boot from the USB recovery drive into the Windows Recovery environment menus area.

7. Select Troubleshooting > Advanced > Start Up repair and follow the prompts.

DO NOT select "Reset this PC" as this will erase all your data and re-install Windows on the HDD.

Good luck.

As far as the mouse and keyboard go, its bluetooth. The OS has to turn on the bluetooth.

You can’t get past stages of boot.

Sounds like you need to reinstall the OS.

Buy a new battery, you can find them in any drugstore. CVS. $3?

The boot menu doesn’t seem to be correct and the PC is asking to restore. Use a wired keyboard for now.
