Best Glue or Tape for Spacebar?

Hi, my spacebar stopped working last week because of the white butterfly mechanism, so I bought a new one and proceeded to replace it, everything works fine, but I can’t seem to glue these transparent parts back on properly, my double sided tape is just too weak and keeps coming off after a few minutes of use. Do you have any recommendations on glue or thin double sided tape I could use?

@thebookyard maybe you could help? I saw you have a lot of knowledge regarding the MacBook keyboards.

we dont know of any double sided tape that is strong enough to hold these into place.

We use different glues depending on how damaged it is. because of the original way the mounts are fitted, with plastic lugs that press through the keyboard frame, the only way we have found we can get the alignment perfect is if we keep the majority of the plastic pegs in place. If they are even slightly misaligned, the key will not click properly, so alignment is paramount.

We use either Diall ‘Glue for Plastics’ or a dab of super glue to adhere it, ensuring to only put glue on the outer edges by the original pegs and not to near the butterfly clip mounts, or the metal spring dome in the middle.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jon @thebookyard - Happy to see you back!

Thanks Dan. Its been a hectic few months, so i've not had much of a chance to get on here to help out recently!

door

Thanks a lot. I have one question though, could you elaborate on what you mean by "keep the plastic pegs in place" and what to align them with? I'm assuming I have to make sure they're perfectly in the middle of the holes they go in?

door

Sure. The left and right plastic mounts have 3 pegs (a bit like stilts) that go through the metal backing of the keyboard. There will be holes where these pegs align in the metal.

when the plastic is lifted out, these pegs have to be snapped.

when you re-align the plastic mount again, because the peg isn't there to press directly into the hole, you have room for movement in all directions. This is what needs to be minimised.

any slight twist in the mounts will make the keycap touch the metal of the top case, which will cause it to snag and stick.

your best bet is to align the mounts and the snapped pegs as best as you can before the glue dries.

I hope this helps.

I have the same problem. both of the clear mounts have the 3 alignment pegs still in place. When you say "ensuring to only put glue on the outer edges by the original pegs", do I need to glue the entire mount down or should the ends where the butterfly mechanism nubs fit into the mount be allowed to flex (e.g. by the two alignment pegs)? I'm waiting on a replacement white butterfly mechanism so anxious to see if I can get this repaired.

Just so you know Apple has a free repair program to fix any keyboard issues with the new butterfly keyboards How to Get a MacBook or MacBook Pro Keyboard Repaired Free Under Apple's Service Program

I’m not sure what glue Apple is using as the plastic is polyester which is hard to glue. Tesa tape might work Tesa 61395 Tape

Would they still take my laptop in as it has no warranty and I've already attempted to fix the problem myself?

door

This is an extended warranty! Apple is on the hook you don’t even need to prove you own it!

door

i have heard of a few cases where Apple have turned people away after they found the keys had been attempted to be repaired themselves. but it completely depends on who you speak to and whether you can confirm that it was faulty before you started working on it.

This is their page for the extended programme:

door

Yeah, the program also expires - my laptop timed out of it a few months back. And if you have replaced your battery already... they aren't going to help you.

Does anyone know how, from where or from whom I can obtain these "transparent parts"? I lost one. What are the chances of obtaining them?

I see in the comments the "transparent parts" are being referred to as plastic lug or mounts. Can I purchase them anywhere?

Many sellers on ebay will sell you the entire assembly (keycap, butterfly piece, and the clear piece). I bought a bunch from seller "macmise".

Could someone make a post teaching how to do this entire thing ? I just broke those transparent parts and already bought a few from ali-express. It’s either this or paying $300.

Thanks.

Don't pay the $300 for simple problem.

just need the right tools and know what you are doing.

I have pictures but not a video, showing how to replace it.

I used locate super glue.

But be sure to remove any glue remains before you apply it, makes a major difference.

Please pay attention that the “transparent part” has an orientation and should not be reassembled with a 180° rotation (on the keys where that is possible). Working on the “enter” key (US Layout) I found that with wrong orientation the key will still work but making contact much less often and with more strength only.
