Golf 2001 heater not working and temp needle stays at 0

Hi folks, I have a 2001 VW Golf 1.6 petrol 4 spd auto. it was working fine until a whole bunch of problems suddenly came up. the temperature needle stays at 0 no matter how long I drive the car. I changed the coolant temperature sensor but it still stays at 0. I turned on the heater and it only gave me very slightly warmer air than outside (despite being very cold outside) and the engine revs up a little more than it used to before all this. I believe the temperature problem is somehow related to the problem with gear and heater. don’t wish to spend a lot of money on it as it is an old car so hoping for some suggestions and fixes here :) thanks a bunch

You may have a bad thermostat.  The thermostat opens when the engine is hot, and closes when the engine is cold, allowing the appropriate amount of coolant to pass through the engine in order to keep it at the correct temperature.  It may be stuck in the open position, which means that the maximum amount of coolant is always passing through the engine, keeping the engine running cooler than it ought to run.

If the thermostat has never been replaced in this car, then it is almost 20 years old.  It’s probably time to replace it.

I don’t believe you can repair a thermostat; but a new one will probably cost less than US$20.
