iPhone 7 Defective Replacement Screen Possibly?

I replaced the cracked screen on my iPhone 7 with a replacement one from iFixit this weekend. The colors were a little less vibrant right off the bat, but were pretty close. No accessibility settings were on. I tried using accessibility settings to get the reds to look more red but to no avail. Today the screen changed to a grayscale only display. I have tried rebooting the phone multiple times, ensuring no accessibility settings are enabled.

I think I may have gotten a defective replacement screen and am bummed that I am going to have to break the seal and replace it again for the phone. That was not easy or fun.

Are there any other non-invasive troubleshooting steps I can perform? When I do enable the accessibility settings and hype out the color/tint I can get the grayscale to be tinted but there is no underlying color.

Please help…

Hi Daniel,

Have you checked that the display accommodation setting is set to off, when a screen fails it does not normally go greyscale, it normally has lines running either vertically or horizontally.

Hi All,

Cool update here. There is another setting under ‘Accessibility’ -> ‘Zoom’ -> ‘Zoom Filter’ where one of the options is grayscale. This turns the whole phone to grayscale when zoomed (three finger tap). My phone was somehow changed to zoom at a really low zoom level and that setting was set on. There is no way to see why the grayscale is set this way unless you stumble on this! Maybe they could put an alert if this is set and you are monkeying around with any of the color filter controls.

Thanks for suggesting things David and Minho. The screen is still lackluster in color, but I will take that up with iFixit. Maybe they can give me another one to try with more vibrant color. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Please contact iFixit support. We are just volunteers helping people fix their stuff.

As an aside, whenever you replace a screen, it’s always a good idea to test everything out before sealing it with adhesive. Sometimes the screen can be bad (as you saw).
