Can I override the power supply?

My MBA magsafe gets super hot (to the point it can burn your finger). I’ve changed a few adapters and I/O boards, but no big difference. The I/O board usually last a few months, then it slowly stops working, probably because the heat.

Anyway, I bought a new laptop, but would like to use the old MBA as a TV computer (watch movies, youtube, etc. since I do not have a smart TV). But I’m not willing to buy a new I/O board every few months.

I have the following 3 ideas:

1) directly solder the power supply to the I/O board, this should work, I’m not sure if I’d get rid of the overheating though

2) remove the I/O board and directly connect the power supply to the motherboard. I’m not sure if the unit would even work then.. since there are many wires connecting the I/O board and the motherboard.

3) remove the battery and connect the power supply instead of the battery.

What choices do I really have?

Well, I’ve got some bad news for you.

The reason the I/O board (MagSafe connector) is melting is the charging logic on the logic board is blown so instead of controlling the current (limiting it) it’s allowing all of the power to go through. In addition your battery is likely bad as well given its age.

So, if you defeat the MagSafe connector the logic board will then overheat and will get to a critical point and burn up (could start a fire).

I would either put the effort in fixing it correctly or toss it and not try to make something out of it.

Thanks you, that explains things. Is there a hazard trying to solder the power to the I/O board? What I mean is, does the MagSafe connector have any fail-safe features preventing current overflow?

Since it mostly overheats when charging the battery, I could disconnect the battery…

The alternative is to toss it, since there’s probably no real point into replacing all the internals of such an old device.

The I/O board's MagSafe melts ;-} Which in its self is a sudo safety feature. The MagSafe charger its self will also overheat so you don't really win here.

Don't forget the charging control logic also controls the power regulation to the system as well and will overheat too!
