Pressing the home button has no effect. I don't think any moisture has been involved. I have been told the board is bad. could this be a loose connection that could be repaired?

What I would try to do first is to restore the Ipod. Back all your stuff up and use iTunes to restore it. If that does not work for you, You may be looking at some hardware issue. The home button is connected by a gold plate on the front panel touching a gold Z -looking spring on the logic board and what sometimes happen is that the "Z-shape" does not make contact with the button, or that it has come of the logic board. But you will have to disassemble your ipod to further determine this. Hope this helps somewhat. Good Luck
