My flash getting hot, when ı plug into my laptop.

I have SanDisk ixpand 32 GB (2 years old) and a brand new SanDisk Ultra Fit 3.0 32 GB USB thumb flash drives.

My problem is, both flash drives are always getting hot when I plug them in and do any file transfer.

  • What can I do to prevent them from overheating ?
  • Is this harmful to them ?

Thanks,

Regards.

Heavy file transfers will cause the drive to get warm. This is normal.

SanDisk flash drives are widely copied. Only the fakes get really hot! A genuine drive just gets warm to the touch, after read/writing.

It is normal for a flash drive to get warm duing use. (my sandisk cruizer blade gets quite warm when moving files from it)

SanDisk flash drives are widely copied. Packaging and the products appear 100% genuine, but only the fakes get REALLY hot. It's really difficult finding an on-line store that sells the real item!

Run Task Manager to see if there is a lot of drive activity with regard to the USB drives.  (A lot of continual drive activity could cause heat.)  If there isn’t, then the USB port is likely putting out too much power.  I don’t know how that could happen, unless there is a chip in the computer which is bad and which controls power output.

If there is more than one USB port, does the problem happen when you plug the flash drives into a different USB port?

Good flash drives will throttle their transfer speeds down to accomodate for heat output from the flash drive itself. Nothing to worry about. I have plenty of flash drives that do this due to heavy file transfers and they are still working till this day so it’s normal.

Ultra Fit 3.1. Just bought new. Original product, not fake, as proven by the PrivateAccess software. Just plugged. No transfer. After about 5 minutes, so hot. Not warm - hot.

For anyone who says only fakes get hot. Please only share information you can back up.
