Upgraded ram and swapped to ssd and having performance issues.

Just upgraded to 8gb of ram and a 1 by ssd from crucial. After multiple issues getting it to restore from a time machine back up its now having major problems. It’s running so slow, can’t get a website to load to run a diagnostic check, App Store not responding, fan is running a mile a minute but it feels cool to the touch. It took almost an hour to boot up and then at least a mother 30 minutes to log into the user account. Can’t get any of the preferences to open. I’m at a loss. Any insight into what could be going on?

Kernel_task just popped up on the activity monitor and it’s using 92% of the cpu. And now it’s not able to find the airport card.

I guess if you open up Activity monitor App you find in utilities folder and select processes engaging your Cpu it will show kernel task using full processor capacity. If that's the case it usually means some sensor is misbehaving and giving wrong readings. Since you replaced parts I would suggest you put back your old ram sticks and hard disk one by one to spot on the culprit. It might be a faulty Ssd sensor but would need replacement to give confirmation.

I’ve put in the old ram and old hdd and it’s still showing over 90% kernel task. Booted in safe mode and it the kernel task went down to under 10% but it now can’t find the airport card.

The best thing here is to try to isolate out which thermal sensor is failing. I would recommend downloading this great app: TG Pro it will allow you to see what the sensors are doing as well as your fan.

What is happening is your CPU is in safe mode where the clocking is reduced to prevent overheating. Your SMC logic is telling the CPU to do this as one or more of the sensors has either failed or is reporting a heat issue.

I’m suspecting the trackpad ribbon cable is either not fully seated or is damaged. I’ve had to replace a few with this symptom.

Bingo!

The fan needs to be looked at either the fan its self is not working, the connection or the controlling logic.

Here's the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Fan Replacement make sure the fans wires are not shorted out to the case and the connection to the logic board is properly seated. The easiest thing after that is to replace the fan MacBook Pro 13" Unibody and MacBook 13" Unibody Fan.

If you still have a problem here you’ll need to find someone with good diagnostic skills to trace out the logic to find what is damaged on the logic board.

@vperk - Did you get a chance to install TG Pro? If you did can you take a snapshot on the main window showing all of the sensors (may need to grow the window) Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag FYI you don't need the full version.
