iPhone 8 plus home button not "clicking" after screen replacement.

I have been repairing iphones in my business for 3 years now. Yesterday I replaced the screen and digitizer on an Iphone 8 plus. The home button was intact and functioning on the original screen. After the repair when I tested the phone, the home button would not respond to the "click" function. I realize that the iphone 7 and 8 no longer have an actual button, but they do vibrate to give the feeling of a click and the function is still there, to return to home and double click to close apps. The finger print reader was functioning , and read the owners fingerprint, but the button wouldn't click. I then reassembled the original screen and the home button functioned correctly. I called the vender who I had order the screen from to request a replacement for what i thought was a defective screen. I was told that it is hit and miss on iphone 8's - and that is was surprising that the home button worked at all. I did some searching on the internet and can't find anything about , the original home button for the iphone not working with a replacement screen. Is this really a hit or miss issue, or did I just have a defective screen. I can't offer a screen replacement and take away the function of the person's home button.

I have the same thing my finger print working but the click not working

I replaced my battery on iphone 8 and click function does not work on the home button.

door

I recently did the procedure on an 8plus and after the home button completely stop working, I had to enable the virtual home button or I won't be able to use the phone at all

door

The same just happened to me. I just found one proper explanation for it in this YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDVnp90a...). Basically, that one screw that goes over the Home button should not be tightened too much. As far as I understood, so that the metal plate doesn't bend (which it did for me).

Morning guys,

I know it has been a long time simce posting this post but I have a few updates (I have comes across this issue far too many times).

When replacing anything other than the screen (particularly on the iPhone 8), I seem to have accidentally sliced the screen cable. I replaced the screen, it all worked as normal.

The second one I had, was on an iPhone 6s. Here I replaced the screen and lost Touch iD, even though I was super careful and didn’t damage the button. A simple disconnect of the battery, trying to turn on with it disconnected. Leaving it 5 mins. Reconnecting, turning it on. Sometimes at this point it would work, others I had to do a bit more. Including disconnecting the battery, disconnecting the screen. Then although this sounds silly, reconnecting the screen before the battery, turn it on. If that doesn’t work, disconnect both, leave 5 mins and reconnect the battery then the screen

Actually worked! Thank you so much.

I have had the same issue with the 7. Some vendors make these screens not up to Apples specifications. The 7's and above are harder to manipulate, so I have resorted to buying them from here. I usually buy from FixeZ, but they are having troubles at the moment with their stuff. Have received many bad parts that have had that issue or couldn't fit in the phone right. I just decided to increase my prices and buy them from here because I haven't had an issue yet. Sucks buying them for a high price but ifixit has them right and won't have 2-3 bad out of a batch of 5 from here.

Thank you Tyler, I did order from here and I hope that this issue will be resolved, because it will be rather embarrassing to have to put the customer’s broken screen back on the phone a second time.

door

I understand, like I said, I have had these issues before and partly because Apple has been trying to crack down on repair shops so it makes it hard and very expensive to acquire good parts. I have not had any issues with parts from here. Unfortunately we have to deal with that because of Apple being very greedy. Best of luck to you sir.

Hey did you solve the problem by buying them from ifixit? I just recently had the same problem with my customer and I haven’t solved it yet. @krystalhelp

I agree with this statement 99.9% because Apple is making it hard to replicate the iPhone screens ( 7 onwards ).

I bought a replacement LCD for an 8 plus from ifixit, Touch ID was recognised with the original home button but it wasn’t clicking. I bought a replacement home button from ifixit and it sometimes register a click but usually won’t work. Tried hard restarts, updating the software, restoring the software, calibrating using the stock apps and nothing seems to work. Anyone can help??

I don’t know if this is the exact problem but on the 7, the screw on the home button bracket that was touching the home button would get tightened to tight and it wouldn’t recognize a click. Hope this helps.

Have you tried a Hard Reset?

• Hold the Home Button and Volume Down until you see the Apple Logo.

I have done this with success on the iPhone 8, presuming it will work on an iPhone 7 as well.

The problem is the home button not working

Power Button instead of Home Button, that's my typo.

Still trying to get use to the fact that the Home button doesn't do anything much anymore.

This problem with the IPHONE 6/7/ & 8 designs & its a big problem. Has caused me a lot of stress to the point where I HATE Iphones. So we have the same problem with the home button. Cracked screen, but home button & ID function still working. Took it to a repairer (as it turns out a non- approved APPLE repairer) - who took screen off, then said the home button function wouldn’t work, so he didn’t replace with new screen or charge me anything BUT difference with me - when he put the original cracked screen back on the HOME BUTTON now NOT functioning but the ID function is still. He said nothing he could do with it now, even if you replace the home button, it won’t work this is the way the Iphone 6/7/8 are set up, the metal device under the home button on the phone, reads the motherboard & is unique to the phone. In other words your home button is stuffed forever!!! I took the phone to a different repairer to get a 2 opinion & he said the same, if you looked very closely at the little metal( or glass) disc that the home button connects to, mine was scratched or cracked. So the original repairer saying he didn’t break it but my phone was in perfect working order beforehand, but now home button stuffed. So i believe it is a hit & miss with this model & it has nothing to do with the screens. I spoke to an Apple consultant, who at first appeared to be really nice & helpful, as it turns out was an a-hole, really only protecting Apple & now recorded that they won’t help me AT ALL - because I took my phone to a non Apple approved repairer. They may have considered replacing the phone for me otherwise. Which I think is absolute BS - now knowing there is clearly a known issue with the home button. I’ve had the phone for 1 month & the home button will NEVER work & I’m stuck with this dud phone. I HATE APPLE devices, they’re greedy & conniving. The original repairer has offered to replace the screen for free - but now I’m nervous what if the Touch ID stops working, the phone is completely useless then. I think its so unfair that Apple are saying its not their problem now. Devastated. I don’t know what to do :(

Same $@$* here also. With same issues. I do know that you can use a ghost home button. It will use more battery but it does what the hard buttons does. I found it somewhere in setting. And you can move it around screen. This may help your Touch ID issue. The rest needs to be iPhone recall.

Hello. Thanks for your reply. Yes I should have said I have that function set up now. Also read someone said the metal bracket that covers the little disc can be screwed too tight hence preventing the home button from working properly. Touch ID finger print currently works fine. I would be so happy if thats all it is. But not confident….

Just recently changed my charging port on a I phone 8 and when I turned it back on everything is working fine except for the home button. Touch ID works fine and when I double tap the home button it still kind of half closes down a window but won’t fully work

Same issue. I’m doing the repair on my own phone because I hate the iPhone 11 and just really like my iPhone 8 Plus. So what I’m hearing is don’t cheap out on the new screen? Also I installed a new home button and as I was folding it over to plug it in I noticed a tiny tear. Could this also be an issue? Really sucks Apple is cracking down on repairs and forcing everyone to buy new phones. Not sure why we can’t just like our old phones and replace them when we want. But then I don’t own a billion dollar company. Phones also currently stuck in a boot loop

No it wasn’t a hit and a mess you did not have a defective screen I’ve purchased three different screens for the same Apple iPhone and I still have the original screen and the home button does not work on any of the new ones nor does touch ID. But when I reinstall the original cracked screen the home button and fingerprint ID is full functioning

Anybody have the issue where the button works when the phone is in 2 pieces, but when you assemble the screen onto the phone body, the button no longer responds after a restart??

  1. Power on phone while in 2 pieces -> home button is working
  2. Attach screen to phone body -> home button is still working
  3. Restart phone with phone assembled -> home button not responding

Hi There,

Sorry to Hear that you are facing that problem, I Fix iPhones and All computing equipment myself and when i get that problem too i always replace the home button as well and not charge the customer any more money. When you put your home button back after you change the screen you should put the home button cover with a 3m glue tape and align the little button at the back of the home button with the home button covers button. They must be touching each other. I had the same problem but after reopening and aligning these two it fixed my home button vibration issue. I hope this helps everyone.
