iPhone caught fire when plugged in

I recently received a phone and was told it caught fire when plugged in through the charging port. My observation that it was just a cheap charger that caused the fire. The iPhone will not power on and I want to know if there is anything I can do to save it. The person said the phone was at 10% when she went to plug it in. I’m wondering if there is just not power going to the battery and I need to replace the charging port. Thanks

Would you be able to post pictures of the damages on the device due to the fire? Is she also trying to save the device or is her main concern the data that's in it?

As @juax suggested, pictures would certainly help here however, in my opinion, if the charger caught or caused fire, there is most likely extensive damage to the charging circuit on the logic board and probably the charge port flex as well.

You'll likely want to replace the battery no matter what, try a new charge port and if that doesn't solve the problem then you will need to have the logic board looked at by an experienced micro-solderer.

Hey @refectio, lets assume that his client wants to just recover the data. If the board itself is ok will transferring the board to another device make it possible to pull data from itunes or are there other things to consider for this process?

There is not damage visible internally in the phone. I plan on pulling the board tomorrow and replacing the battery. If all else fails I’ll have it looked at by a micro-solderer.

If the board has damage then swapping the logic board won't work. Unless it turns on with another battery and detects on computer.

Probably going to need charging chip (Tristar IC) and if worse some other components on the board needing to be replaced / fixed.

I did an iPhone 7 yesterday where charging circuit got fried by a smoking car charger. You would be surprised that the charging port most of the time doesn't go bad.

@juax if the board is fine, then all you need is a known-good lightning port and battery to transfer the data via iTunes/3uTools.
