My Nexus 6P has water damage, what do I need to replace?

I was kayaking with my Nexus 6P in a waterproof bag, and from reaching in and out of the bag, a very minute amount of water came into contact with my phone. The phone also majorly overheated, it was hotter than a Viking's funeral (It was for sure 110°F).

Issues:

  • the phone will not charge
  • there was a blinking red LED but it died completely, so that bad boy went kaput

I cracked this baby open and sure enough the water damage indicator was Crayola Electric Crimson.

I don't know what to look for besides that, but I'm guessing I'll have to replace the battery, maybe the daughterboard? There is some corrosion up on those copper tab thingy's if that helps.

If any of you guys and gals could give me some tips on what to look for so I know what to replace, or if there's another solution for my unfortunate 6P. Anything you throw this way would be much appreciated.

P.S. I got it to charge up to forty percent yesterday. Out of the blue it decided to suck up some juice from the outlet, but it went back to playing dead today.

Hi @caleabbrown

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

First do not turn on your phone and then you need to with the phone turned off, remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.''

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from most pharmacies) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

You may have to replace the battery as it is very hard to recover a battery from water damage.

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit Nexus 6P guide which may be of some help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.
