Try rocking the lawn mower forward and back while shift the gear selector .Once its in neutral it should start. Hope this helps

If it is a hydrostatic tranny, there is no gear selector.

jimmydawson0420 worst case scenario would be a bad transaxle. If the trick by @jimfixer does not work, try purging your transaxle. Directions for that are found Mower is stuck in neutral gear

I have a similar problem with shifting on a 917.272672. Very difficult to shift. I may not have the answer but I can tell you what it is not., at least on my unit. I removed the transaxle opened and cleaned each part. The grease was like clay except where the parts made contact. I installed new grease , “S Cotton Picker Spindle Grease 00”, that is the actual name, not a opinion. Well it helped the overall shifting but it is not as good as expected. I did not need to replace any parts but that may be where I errored. I had noticed over the years that the transaxle drive pulley would wear and vibrate when running and have replaced it some time ago. It is back to that point again and needs replacing but I don’t think that is my shifting problem, but due to that vibration the drive shaft from it to inside of the transaxle has a bit of slack and can be moved. I think my problem is in that shaft is binding with the gear inside . I neglected to say that when the motor is off, it shifts as expected. That means the gear shaft is under stress when you push on the brake because the motor is still pulling on the pulley. In starting my rebuild project of course I tried to find out the availability of parts and the bearings for the shaft are not available . If you know of a supplier please post the information.

Just to reiterate on Charlie's write up. I have a Husqvarna LT 125 42"cut 6 speed rideon mower. I have had the gearbox / transmission to pieces on a couple of occasions and rebuilt it finding nothing broken or worn inside. It changes gear easily when the engine is NOT running. Note: There are two spring loaded detent balls on the top of the gearbox which can be tightened down to adjust the pressure on the internal gear selector plate. When the engine is running and the brake/clutch peddle depressed I can go from neutral to any other gear selection and ride off. When it comes to changing to a lower or higher gear the gear lever is jammed when the brake/clutch peddle is depressed. There is are two small rectangular brake pads which compress onto a small disc located on the RHS of the gearbox, this is operated when the brake/clutch peddle is depressed by the brake rod.

There should be a compression spring between the nut on the threaded end of the brake rod and the hole in brake lever mechanism. This is adjustable so that when the brake/clutch peddle is depressed it stops the shaft in the gearbox from rotating. This should now make it easy to change gear.... but it doesn't. I have found I can change gear up or down simply by just using the gear shift. The one major drawback with operating the mower like this is that if I am near a tree etc and I need to stop by using the brake/clutch peddle then I can no long change gear; I have to turn the engine off. Place the gearbox in neutral, restart engine, depress brake/clutch, select gear and off I go again. I am thinking along the line of Charlie in that the drive belt is still trying to drive, ie it is still putting tension on the gearbox belt pully. Perhaps I should consider using a slightly longer belt or somehow adjusting the belt tension system on the underside of mower.
