Xbox, flat screen, home stereo
I have a question hope someone can help me. I have my xbox hooked up to my flat screen (via hdmi cable) I have my home stereo hooked up to my flat screen. But I can't get my surround sound to play through my speakers. My home stereo doesnt have a hdmi or a optical output. I am wondering what I have to do to get sound to come from my tv to home stereo.
Update
My sony receiver is a STR-450Z and my tv is a LG 42 inch LCD model # 42lk450-UK and i can't get sound from my receiver to my speakers
Update
I spoke with a consultant from sony in a support chat room, and he had asked me if my tv had a AUDIO OUT and after looking I could not find one. So I have decided to take my home theater/stereo into a different direction and work on purchasing a new receiver. Now my question is if my speakers I have now will be the best choice for the receiver I am looking at. I am looking at the Pioneer VSX series receivers and purchasing 2 more (small) speakers to serve as the rear and just build my system to a 7.1 surround sound. Any further advice on this would be appreciated.
From my understanding though is that without the audio out I can't do much with my current setup.
Update
I don't know how I could have set up audio out from my xbox 360, I have a hdmi cable from my xbox to my flat screen tv. I am just not sure if it is possible to do with my receiver seeing as how I don't have a audio out on my tv. My tv has the following connections, 3 hdmi, 2 usb, 2 composite, and 2 component hookups. But if I have the hdmi coming from my xbox to my tv then I am not sure what I can do to get the audio out.
Update
If I am understanding you correctly then if I was to purchase a microsoft hdmi cable then I should be able to hook up my audio cable to my receiver via the microsoft cable. Just means that I wasted 50 dollars on a hdmi cable I purchased at best buy. I am guessing this is what I will have to do then I will have to order one of those rather than getting a new receiver. Please let me know if I am understanding this right.

Steve if you could post pictures of the connection on your TV as well as Your stereo that would be great. Also if you have a make and model of both that would be helpful as well.

Hey Steve checked your equipment and it should be ok except I could not find if your TV has Audio out. You did not say which xbox. Right now I am assuming you are using the RCA connector Red, White, Yellow. Connect the yellow (video) to your tv and connect the red and white one to your receiver and see what you get. There is info on here http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/ho... for the 360 and here http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/... for the xbox...

Steve, you have a good setup. All you need to do is connect the audio out from your xbox to the receiver and the video to your TV. Nothing wrong with your current receiver :-)

receivers cannot use HDMI to get the audio signal. This means you MUST still connect your 360 to your receiver with a separate audio cable. In the 360's case, this would be an optical audio cable. The connector for the optical audio cable is located on the HD-AV cable kit, or, if you bought the official Microsoft HDMI Cable Kit for the 360, it came with a special connector that features only the audio ports. This should be doable if you simply connect an optical audio cable from the HD AV cable at the end attached to your xbox directly to your receiver. These cables are relative inexpensive and can be found on place like amazon.com. Cheaper then a new receiver.
