I would review the IFIXIT guides to figure out what I need to service MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 & A1260
As to the differences its just the logic board that is really different. Some versions of parts only work with a similar version of assembly. This is independent of the model, Apple altered things during the production of both series.

I successfully installed on my A1226, the following parts from an A1260:
- display
- complete upper part of the main case
Just disassembled and reassembled the two macs, with keyboard and trackpad cable requiring a little re-routing.
Multitouch trackpad with more than two fingers recognition working after reboot (OS El Capitan).
