Max memory limited by CPU or board/chipset?

Is the RAM limited by the board/chipset itself?

Reviewing Intel, it claims 64GB maximum, not 32GB, for the i5 and i7.

@spezticle - I'm not sure were you're heading here. Your 21.5" system only has 2 slots. Unlike the 27" models which has 4 slots and most can support the 16 MB RAM modules which at this point in time is the largest RAM module available.

Yeah, I didn't realize 16GB was the largest acquirable module. They do make 32GB sticks but in a traditional 288 pin desktop modules and not the 260 SODIMMs.

Theoretically speaking then, if they did make a 32gb 260pin, we could put 64g in, yeah?

It would depend on the PHC chip and the number of address lines it supports. In addition the lines would need to be wired from the sockets. Then the systems firmware would need to support the ID string.

It would be a reach here, sorry.

Why do you think you need this much RAM? What are you running here?

Yeah, that does make sense. I run virtual machines for work and also like to use ram disks for super fast read/write. I can make it fine with 32gb

How about upgrading your SSD storage? Putting in a higher capacity PCIe/NVMe drive will get you more performance than the SATA based HD or even the Fusion Drive based drive combo if you have that.

You maybe pushing your system a bit hard here with VM's keep in mind the foreground VM owns the most CPU ticks & threads (8 total threads). This is where the new iMac Pro can really shine! Depending on the config you can get 20, 28 or 32 threads! This would make using VM's much more powerful. In addition, you could push the system unto 128 GB of RAM! Yes, I know its pricy! But its the best one can do unless you build your own hackintosh even then the iMac Pro is a better price.
